Washoe Lake State Park

Story

Washoe Lake State Park is a year-round public recreation area occupying on the southeast shore of Washoe Lake in Washoe County, Nevada. The state park lies to the east of Lake Tahoe, approximately north of Carson City near U.S. Route 395. The area around the park is known for its high winds making Washoe Lake a popular destination for windsurfers.HistoryThe first known inhabitants of the area in and surrounding Washoe State Park were the Washoe people. The Washoe would generally spend the winter in the lowlands of the Washoe Valley and summer on the shores of Lake Tahoe. The Washoe used cattails and willows from the shores of Washoe Lake to make baskets.White settlers arrived on a permanent basis in the area soon after the discovery of silver in the Comstock Lode near Virginia City in 1859. The find brought thousands of traders, loggers, and miners to the Washoe Valley. Franktown, west of Washoe Lake, was established by Mormon pioneers in the same year. Two silver processing mills were built near the lake. Ophir Mill was built on Washoe Lake's western shore and the New York Mill was built beside Little Washoe Lake. The remnants of both mills can be seen today.

Really great views but for an entrance fee you'd think they'd keep it more clean. Nope, there are a lot of horse poop and dog poop on the ground. Disgusting. The bathrooms were locked during winter so I had to go do my business behind a bush. And trust me, with the desert terrain, it was hard to find a good spot to hide and do business. The lake view is awesome though and a very peaceful place for a walk. The highway sounds are pretty loud though and can be heard through the entire park.

Nice place! Although it was said it's open year round and I paid a fee for parking and all the paths (except path to parking) were covered in snow, so I didn't understood where I can go from there. I wasn't able to access the lake itself because of that. But the view around was just spectacular. So, I need to see how it looks in summer. Edit: I camped there and it was great. Showers are superb! The only downside is that camping is limited to 7 days. First come, first serve.

Wow. Very clean, lotd of trails. A quick get away from Carson or Reno. Large paved sites. Not stacked on top of one another. Spring time and early fall would be best. Summer is to hot.

First come first serve for camping. You cannot make reservations. Primitive sites. No power and shared water. Bathrooms and showers on location. Each spot had a table and shade. Great spot. Gorgeous surrounded. Jack rabbits running around.

Campgrounds with shelters, the Miner's Maze for kids to play, bird habitat, coyotes, jack rabbits, magpies, small lizards rustling through dry underbrush, hawks, white pelicans and more. $7 entrance fee, $5 for NV residents. Clean, basic restrooms, a dump station, running water, fire pits and the campsites are cleaned daily as campers check out. The lake is great for kayaking and jet skis. The water draws in a significant crowd on weekends so get there early! This is a great get-a-way and yet it is still close to Reno and even closer to Carson City. Slide Mountain and the Sierra Nevadas are in view. They make a gorgeous backdrop during the winter when they are snow covered. Gasoline, propane and convenience stores are nearby on East Lake Blvd.
