Story

Welcome to Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Located in the southeastern corner of Virginia, Back Bay NWR was established by Presidential Proclamation in 1938 to provide habitat for migrating and wintering waterfowl, particularly greater snow geese. Today, the Refuge continues to be an important link in the chain of National Wildlife Refuges located along the Atlantic Flyway.

Refuge grounds are open seven days a week, sunrise to sunset. The Visitor Contact Station is open Tuesday - Friday 8:00am-4:00pm and Saturdays 9:00am-4:00pm, closed Sunday and Monday.

Mission

Our mission at Back Bay NWR is to provide habitat for migrating and wintering waterfowl, particularly great snow geese. In addition, as part of the National Wildlife Refuge System (US Fish and Wildlife Service) our mission is to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

We very much enjoyed the guided moonlight paddle in Back Bay. For us, the wind and waters were calm and the moon rising over the treetops was absolutely spectacular. Our guides were very knowledgeable and safety conscience. Highly recommended if you're in the area.

A rare preservation of coast line that is a nice place to visit. Park entrance fee is required. Visited on a windy day when the water had been pushed south on the bay leaving shallow bay waters at the kayak entrance point and leaving lots of vegetation to deal with if paddling. On a different day, it appears the water level would be much higher making conditions much better for going out on the water. We spent time walking around the marsh land on the wooden walk ways. Within an hour we saw three water moccasin snakes. The visitor center was closed when we were there. There is a 3 mile trail that can hiked or biked on that goes to the North Carolina border, or there is also a tram shuttle that runs (check the schedule before planning on this). A nice change of scenery if you are looking for something different than the beach (no swimming permitted).

Absolutely gorgeous. Nice to know there are still unspoiled beaches in Virginia. For a real treat, bike down to False Cape. Takes some effort but the reward is huge!
