About

Boone KOA opened in 1973 and is still owed and operated by the Harmon Family. The campground is the highest KOA east of the Miss. at almost 4000 feet. It is located four miles from town in a beautiful peaceful country setting on Harmony Mountain.

Story

For a real high, stay overnight at the Boone KOA, the highest KOA east of the Mississippi at an altitude of nearly 4,000 feet. Nature and comfort meet here, a spot with long pull thrus under tall trees, a pool, arcade games and even a farm animal mini zoo, all set atop a scenic mountain just 4 miles from city services. Come experience KOA's peaceful country setting and cool mountain breezes. The average summer temperature is 73 degrees. Hike miles of footpaths on rugged Grandfather Mountain, the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Range. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds mere minutes from your campsite. About 9 miles from this KOA is the New River, where you can go tubing or canoeing. The topography and scenery will delight even the most intrepid cyclists: Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong trained on the back roads of the Boone area.

I read reviews before booking, I read a lot of negative so I was on the fence about booking my stay. It was me and my 2 nephews age 8 and 4. I am SO glad I booked a cabin at this KOA. The staff greeted me by name when I checked in (I spoke to them on the phone and they must have remembered my voice, awesome customer service). The pool was just that, a pool. Nothing fancy but at least they have one. The cabin was perfect for the 3 of us. I saw a lot of reviews that complained about the steep roads to get here but what do people expect at a place that has an elevation of 3500 ft? The farm was awesome, my nephews loved feeding the goats and donkeys, there were 2 baby goats born on Sunday when we checked in and by our 3rd day they started coming up to the fence and we got to pet them. Overall my stay at Boone KOA was fantastic.

The staff is very friendly and welcoming! Customer service is outstanding! We just came back home today after camping at the Boone KOA for the weekend. A pretty bad storm came through which knocked out the power and water at the camp sites. We were able to use the bath house and it was the cleanest of any campground I've ever been to. The showers were very clean, with tiling throughout. There was even a place for all of your shampoo, soap, conditioner, etc. Plenty of dry area right outside the shower for changing, and each stall has a door. The campsites were pretty level and most were pull through. A little more space between sites than many campgrounds. We will definitely return! We almost decided to leave after the storm took out the water, but we decided to take a day trip to play in some water, then showered in the clean bath house. Great family location! Oh- they have a small petting zoo on site. Goats, donkeys, chickens and probably forgetting something. The road to the campground is a bit curvy but take it easy and you'll be fine. It was our second time ever using our new 23ft microlite and we did just fine.

This was our first experience with a KOA campground and we couldn't be more pleased with our experience. The campground is very welcoming and child friendly. The only downside is that if you stay in a cabin bring your own air mattress because the ones there are very uncomfortable. We will go back.

Sites not level. 2 inches under rear wheels and still not level. Only 1 bathroom and it was closed from 11 till 1 for cleaning. You had to preplan restroom breaks. We had handicap aboard and it was 50 yard uphill walk to restroom. Picnic table was old and splintered, not good for seating. Fire pit was 5 rocks in a circle. Sewage hook up unusable.

One of the cleanest KOAs! Newly remodeled shower room and always clean rest rooms. Septic smell at times, if you are at the bottom of the hill, so ask for higher up. People are real nice and at least one Geocache on site! We go here yearly! Update: been staying last two years in Fully furnished cabins - just great! A nice tiny little resort in the mountains. haha.
