Story

Forces all around us are constantly at work shaping the earth's surface. Millennia pass as oceans rise and recede. Mountains thrust upward and erode. Volcanoes, by comparison, are instantaneous. Their eruption can destroy an environment and create it anew. Located in the High Plains of New Mexico, Capulin Volcano and the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field exemplify this drastic changing of landscape.

Great views from the rim of the extinct volcano. Good self-guided tours. Small gift shops and visitor's center. Steep, twisty, narrow road to the rim. If you have a large RV they have to send a ranger to clear and close the road, and to pay for the extra manpower, they charge $18. It is worth the charge as you don't want to meet someone coming up as you are coming down around a blind curve. Although the look on their faces was worth it. Oops, missed one.

Incredible view and clean facilities. The kids enjoyed the activities which let them earn a badge. The formations impress anyone and there are clear explanations regarding what you're looking at.

Great little day trip! Amazing views, fun little hike around the top of the volcano if you like, or just enjoy the view from the parking area. I recommend packing a picnic since local eats are fair to none.

A cool little place to stop and see. If your in for a longer hike, walk the perimeter on the ridge of a 60,000 year old volcano...pretty cool!

This is a great national monument to visit. It is a little out of the way but a great stop. There is a nice paved trail at the summit, one around the rim and the other down into the caldera. The junior ranger is well designed. Will is a wonderful ranger who is very helpful.
