Story

Haynes Furniture has evolved through entrepreneurial innovation and a commitment to the people of Virginia. Truly a remarkable story, Ellis Strelitz, a local Coca-Cola salesman, turned his dream into reality. In 1930, Mr. Strelitz purchased a small furniture store in Norfolk from L.D. Haynes. Joined by his son and his younger brother, Mr. Strelitz set out to build Virginia’s biggest furniture store and to revolutionize the furniture industry. In the late 1950’s, the Strelitz brothers moved the business to downtown Norfolk, and also acquired a small furniture store in Suffolk which became the second branch of Haynes Furniture.

In the seventies, the Strelitz family radically changed the way Virginians acquired home furnishings. They realized that people want the biggest selection to choose from as well as the lowest price possible. Customers also did not like to wait days or weeks to take home what they saw and touched as they shopped. They wanted what they wanted, and they wanted it now! So, that is what Haynes delivered. A huge and beautiful store attached to an enormous warehouse - selection and no waiting all at once! In excess of 300,000 square feet, the new Haynes store held as much as ten normal-sized stores. Committing to this new concept took two attributes the family has never seemed to lack - the vision to see, and the nerve to make it happen. This location continues to operate as the Corporate Headquarters for Haynes Furniture.

This review is very much overdue. S.O. and I purchased a dining room table back in December. It was about a week before Christmas and we were really wanting to find something that we would be able to use for Christmas dinner. When we walked into the store, we were greeted by Doug. He invited us to look around but gave us our space to shop before checking on us later. We found the perfect table for our space. Then came the delivery. Doug was very good about setting realistic expectations. With less than a week before Christmas, it was possible the table would not arrive on time. Still, we ordered it and hoped for the best. Doug consistently kept us updated on the status of the order and yes, it arrived in time for Christmas. The gentleman who delivered our table and chairs were also a delight. They were very polite and ensured we were 100% pleased before they left the furniture with us. Thanks to your entire team for providing excellent service. We will definitely return in the future.

Phenomenal experience! I was shopping to buy something that day. My sales person was Don Parker. I've read some not so pleasant things on the reviews about other people's experiences with the sales people, mine was polar opposite - very pleasant. Don greeted me at the door immediately. Gave a brief run down of the sales and my options, then let me shop in peace. I didn't feel nagged to make a purchase. He checked in every 10 minutes to make sure I didn't have any questions. If Don didn't know the answer to a question he was prompt in looking something up or asking for clarification from a manager. Don had a pleasant and professional demeanor. He walked me through the options of custom furniture options and pricing (after about 30 minutes of chatting through it I decided not to go custom). After an hour and a half to two hours of assistance I purchased a living room set and chose to pick up my furniture instead of having it delivered. I picked up my furniture two days after purchase. Seamless transaction from start to finish. I actually went back there a couple of days ago to specifically chat with Don about possibly getting a bedroom set. He wasn't there, so instead I was assisted by Kenny who was just as helpful as Don.

WORST Customer Service on the planet. I ordered a sofa and love seat that were custom made. When delivered, they had obvious imperfections in the quality, and workmanship. The color is off white and it was delivered with a very obvious stains on the sofa and love seat! Spoke with Customer service at the time of delivery and they agreed to have a technician come out that Friday to see if he could get the stains out. Well, Friday came and the customer service folks called to schedule a service appt. to which I replied that someone was supposed to come on that day as it was already scheduled. For some reason, they did not have in their system an appointment. So, we rescheduled. The next appointment day came and I received a call that the technician had a family emergency and so they needed to reschedule. We rescheduled and requested a certain appointment slot due to work and childcare, that was unable to be honored so they had to reschedule again.Had the next appointment time come and go and when I called to see what happened was told "Oh, no one called to tell you the technician couldn't come today." So, we rescheduled. That appointment I was just told today has to be rescheduled because the technician has a family emergency. No one can help. I have been hung up on by the folks that Haynes contracts to service their furniture- USA Quality Furniture Services. I've asked to speak with managers after each of these instances- the managers are ALWAYS in a meeting. I've been told from 3 different people at the actual Hayes on Broad that a manager would call me to resolve- I've not heard from anyone. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE..... but I just received a bill from them- go figure. Oh yea, the USA Quality furniture folks will ring your phone 1 time and when you answer, they will hang up and put in the notes that you did not answer their calls- this happened 2 times- I have the call logs. UNBELIEVABLE! All I want is for them to pick the items up at this point. It is completely ridiculous. What happened to good customer service??? I would give them 0 stars, but it won't let me.

Where do I begin with Haynes?? I'll start positive and say I've had a positive sales experience both times I've made purchases from them and I had positive delivery experiences. My first time purchasing from them I ordered a dining room table and chairs and a dresser and night stand. EVERY SINGLE PIECE CAME IN DAMAGED. The dresser had a smashed corner, the side table was scuffed and one of my chairs with the dining room set had finger prints all over it in the stain (someone touched it before it was dry). Haynes sent someone out to repair the furniture and I still wasn't satisfied with the dresser-there was a significant color difference with the repair. Haynes did ultimately replace that piece. I was still extremely disappointed by the fact that I received all damaged furniture and I didn't pay for damaged furniture-I paid for new not repaired furniture. Then some time passes and I need a new couch. I did a lot of shopping and couldn't find anything I liked so I decided to try Haynes again-I figured maybe it was an isolated incident. No it was not. My couch came in and it has serious quality control issues-there isn't enough fabric to cover the back of the couch and there are holes with stuffing coming out. The back is scuffed and there is a several inch long gap along the seam in the back with some fabric bunching. I have visible fabric dangling from the bottom of the couch. Called Haynes, had an email submitted, and no response to date from Haynes. All in all I never should have went back. Their quality control issues do not seem isolated and there seems to be zero pride or care in the product delivered to their customers.

The worst experience in my life. They tried to gave me a used coffee table as if it was new, THREE TIMES. Delivery of the items was supposed to be a one time thing, it took them 4 delivery times (meaning I had to take 4 days off from work since the window of delivery they offer is unrealistic). Sales man lied to us on several occasions. Financing was promised to be for 48 months, when invoice appeared in my mailbox payment doubled what they told me. The free carpet they gave us was coming apart since day of delivery, had to returned it cause it was getting my house dirty and giving us allergies. Talking to the manager was useless, and as I mentioned I was gonna share my bad review and experience to him, he threatened to call the cops on me. They deserve zero stars. What a joke of a company this is!
