About

Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park is home to a prehistoric earth and stone enclosure built 2000 years ago by Native Americans.

Story

The Old Stone Fort was built during the Middle Woodland Period, 1,500-2,000 years ago. Native Americans used this area continuously for about 500 years, eventually leaving it abandoned. By the time European settlers arrived, it was unclear of what the area had been used for which resulted in it being misnamed as a fort. In 1966, the state of Tennessee purchased 400 acres of the Chumley estate as the core of what is now Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park.

The park is home to an abundance of activities for guests to enjoy. The main hiking trail follows the wall of Old Stone Fort which was used by the Native Americans as a ceremonial gathering place. The trail threads through dramatic scenery where you can see the original entrance of the fort which was designed to face the exact spot on the horizon where the sun rises during the summer solstice. Visitors can learn about the Old Stone Fort on this hike with twelve interpretive panels as well as enjoying the areas graceful waterfalls.

The Old Stone Fort attracts history enthusiasts from all over. The park’s museum consists of displays of prehistoric Native American replicas as well as dioramas and photos. The exhibits provide information on the theories regarding the enclosure’s builders, archaeological excavations at the site and the culture of its builders. There is also a small theater for viewing an orientation film and other videos as well as group presentations. The museum also houses the welcome center, park office and gift shop.

Mission

To preserve and protect, in perpetuity, unique examples of natural, cultural and scenic areas and provide a variety of safe quality outdoor experiences through a well-planned and professionally managed system of state parks.

This is probably one of my favorite nature trails. There are many different side trails you can go on, and each one is beautiful in its own way. You can get right up next to the water, or you can take a "safe route" and walk around the the path that encircles the field. Whatever path you choose, you're sure to get in a good workout. This place is perfect for family outtings, dates, and everything in between. (Also a great lesson for children to learn about the fort, as they have signs telling you the history behind it.)

Very interesting place. Has some terrific views. And the history of the place is intriguing to say the lest. The museum was disappointing, but it doesn't hurt the ambiance of the park. Nice picnic area also. Trials are clear and obvious. The ranger and staff member were very accommodating in telling further details, the history of the prehistoric folks who used this ground.

The best trail in TN! This trail, along with its side trails, offer many great views of waterfalls, swimming holes, wildlife, and historical features. To make the hike more interesting and challenging, take the unmarked trail to the right along the river just past the museum. They follow the river and eventually meet the alternate trail access point. Take the alternate trails for an extended hike with more elevation change (500'). Keep to the right for the longest route around the park.

Simply one of my favorite parks to walk through. They have have several trails with different difficulty levels which includes a short flat trail in the field in which is quick to complete so if you just want to go take a quick walk one day then you will be able to do that. Lots of amazing scenery and overall very fun every time we go here. You will also more than likely see a lot of wildlife such as deer no matter what trail you choose. I highly recommend this place for a nice walk with the family.
