Pilot Mountain State Park

Story

Pilot Mountain State Park is a North Carolina state park in Surry and Yadkin Counties, North Carolina in the United States. Located near Pinnacle, North Carolina on highway US 52, it covers 3735acre and includes the distinctive 2,241 foot (683 m) peak of Pilot Mountain.HistoryThe Saura, a Native American tribe of the North Carolina Piedmont region, knew the mountain as Jomeokee meaning the Great Guide. It served as a guidepost also for the European settlers of the Carolina who similarly named it Pilot. The Saura were driven out of the area by the Cherokee. The first European settlers in the area were Moravians, a Christian religious group from Germany that settled in the Thirteen Colonies seeking freedom of religion and to evangelize among the Native Americans. Settlement in the area was slowed until after the American Revolutionary War which relieved tense relations between the Cherokee, the British, and local setters.

Oh my gosh !!! What views. This is a must see mountain. Bring some walking gear, water and a snack because I can promise that even though you didn’t come to walk you will. We went for a little walk and every time we stopped to take in the view we found another trail to explore. Bathrooms are clean, trails are amazing and it’s kept clean.

Very nice state park. Super clean, well kept and have park rangers on hand for help. They offer great hiking and rock climbing. However, for such a big park, parking can be problematic if you want to hike to the top (went on a weekend around 12). If you just want to drive to the top there is PLENTY of parking. Offer more parking down below and I think you would get more people to visit and stay longer.

Nice hike from visitor center to summit. You can also drive to top where there is parking, picnic areas and covered shelters. The overviews at the top are spectacular. You can also hike around the pinnacle landmark. Camping is available at lower elevations. Highly recommend, but go early.

Just a quick pit stop on the way home to SC, but the views and scenery were outstanding. Definitely will be back when we can spend more time. Absolutely beautiful area.

This is a pretty good state park, but I don't think the hiking and views are quite as good as others. You can park at the bottom and hike up to the summit, but I've never done that. It's a 6 mile hike round trip. I've been twice now and both times I've driven to the summit. There's a parking lot up there that can get a bit crowded, but I've been able to find parking both times. This park tends to be more crowded then most since there are easy trails. Once at the summit, there are a couple of good view points near the parking lot. You can also walk about a tenth of a mile to get a great view of Pilot Mountain. After doing those, I always do the eight tenths of a mile Jomeokee Trail. It loops around Pilot Mountain. There are some pretty good views looking out below the mountain, but I think the coolest part is the rock of the mountain. It's short and easy. There are a few steps, but nothing very hard. I usually come here after hiking at Hanging Rock State Park since the two are only about half an hour apart. Overall, Pilot Mountain isn't my favorite state park, but I think it's worth checking out at least once.
