Mayo River State Park

Story

Mayo River State Park is a North Carolina state park in Rockingham County, North Carolina in the United States. It is near Mayodan, North Carolina and covers 2,187acre along the Mayo River. The park is one of the newest in the North Carolina system, having been authorized by the General Assembly in May 2003. An interim facility, called the Mayo Mountain Access, was opened to the public on April 1, 2010.InformationCurrently, the only designated public access is at the Mayo Mountain Access, near Mayodan. A visitor contact station, two picnic shelters, a small picnic area, a half-mile loop hiking trail, a 1.8-mile loop hiking trail, rest rooms, a catch and release fishing pond, and a maintenance facility were built or renovated at the public access. The area was once a private, corporate park formally known as Mayo Park. The state renovated and restored some of the existing structures from the former park, including a picnic shelter designed by architect Antonin Raymond. Raymond designed the original Mayo Park, and the park tried rebuild the area in a style compatible with Raymond's design. The park has several other land holdings along the river, not yet formally open to the public. One area of the park, near the Virginia state line, has a waterfall call Fall Creek Falls.Nearby state parksThe following state parks are within 30mi of Mayo River State Park: Hanging Rock State ParkHaw River State ParkPilot Mountain State Park

Being a new state park, you can tell it still has a lot to offer. There is currently a 2-mile loop trail that's well maintained, and a smaller loop trail inside of it that has Kids Tracks, to teach children about our environment. There are shelters of various sizes right next to the parking lot that can be reserved by contacting the park office. Picnic tables and grills pepper the area. But the real gem is a waterfall about a 20-minute drive away - driving directions are available from the park office. More picnic tables and grills next to a small parking area, and a short walk leads to a beautiful waterfall with a pool below that just begs to be swum in. It's definitely worth a visit - you won't be disappointed.

As a relatively new state park that is still under development the features are limited here, but what they have seems very nice. There were a couple of large shelters, as numerous picnic tables, restrooms and a large open field for playing. I hiked the 2 mile loop trail through the woods which was well marked and goes through various environments, by a partially collapsed log cabin, and was an easy hike. A cutoff offers an easier 0.5 mile loop as well. Along the trail various types of trees had descriptions posted. Near the shelters there is a pond for fishing. Just off the park grounds is a launch on the Mayo River, really just concrete stairs appropriate for kayaks and canoes coming downstream. Lots of potential for this park.
