What a surprise. Do take the time to get off the highway going in either direction to spent a couple or more hours passing through these sites. The road will take you past two very different areas of interest. It is best to get out and walk in the ancient ruins or the volcanic trails, visit the small museum and take photos. Then you come out back on the highway about 20 miles further in whichever direction you were going, so take the first exit you come to so as not to back track.

A very nice place to spend a few hours or all day. Interesting to say the least. Trails through the lava fields not overly hard. Just watch your step. Visitors center nice. Has interesting exhibits. Picnic grounds. Your not allowed on Sunset crater, but just being near it and imagine what it must have been like. Second thought, not a good idea to stand in the way of a lave flow. You can still imagine it though. Not far from downtown Flagstaff. Half hour, 40 minutes.

Panoramic view of the twin peaks if you take the Lenox loop trail. The trail is not at all strenuous. Can walk this in tennis shoes with no problem.

A great stop for a short hike. Lava flows. There is an entry fee but your national parks pass is valid here.
