Story

The Tennessee Central Railway Museum is a volunteer, non-profit organization. Our mission is to preserve, restore, interpret, and operate historic railroad equipment to educate our guests about America's railroads.

We have a growing collection of historic equipment, but TCRM is much more than a static museum. Our specialty is operating historic trains, providing a unique opportunity to ride a 1950's vintage train through beautiful Middle Tennessee.

Since the 1989, TCRM has been running passenger excursions from Nashville to points east. Current destinations include Lebanon, Watertown, Cookeville, and Monterey, Tennessee. Trains typically consist of air-conditioned coaches with refreshments and souvenirs available onboard. Many trains also include deluxe accommodations in special cars available at extra cost.

TCRM has preserved a collection of passenger cars, cabooses, freight cars, and locomotives. Our volunteers are at work on most Saturdays restoring and maintaining this equipment.

The museum began as an extension of the local division of the National Model Railroad Association, the Cumberland Division SER-NMRA. Since Cumberland Division SER-NMRA Inc., an IRS 501(c)(3) Federal income tax-exempt organization, does business as Tennessee Central Railway Museum, donations to the Museum are tax-deductible.

The Museum headquarters is located in the former Tennessee Central Railway Master Mechanic's office at 220 Willow Street near downtown Nashville. The building houses offices, a library, and a collection of railroad material, including the largest collection of Tennessee Central Railway artifacts to be found anywhere. Monthly membership meetings are held at this facility.

Awesome place to go to even if you're not riding a train. The museum features some cool railroad relics and some awesome model layouts in multiple scales. You can also go check out some of the trains out in the yard. They're really awesome. They also restore trains here, so you can look at those as well.

My family and I have done several trips and we always have a great time. We've done the Easter Bunny excursion, the North pole excursion, and my husband and I have done Wine on the Rails a couple of times. The staff is helpful and friendly and there's always something new & fun to do when you get to your destination. The only complaint I have is using the restroom on the train. My advice would be to go before you leave or try to hold it until you get wherever your going. Also, they sell food, drinks, and souvenirs on the train a prices are very reasonable so no worries if the kiddos get hungry. Prepare for a long ride and a lot of fun. They have so many different types of trips so it shouldn't be hard to find one for you and your family, friends, or significant other to enjoy.

Overall the experience was very good. It was very friendly the hostess people were very very friendly and attentive. We were very much aware of the people around us on the return trip in the dome car, so we really enjoyed the trip back more. At Baxter itself in town, we had trouble finding someplace good to eat. The food that was served at the Welcome Center was cold and not enough condiments and other things with it. We ended up going over to the pizza place where we found lots of people eating pizza, we found very very friendly waitresses there also, and had an overall very good to excellent experience at the pizza place. Overall I would rate the trip over as a six, and the right back as an 8.

So sad. They don't provide enough information about the tour, before hand. I called 3 times to ask how long the layover was in town and got the same answer train leaves at this time and arrives back at that time. Never could answer other questions. They apparently use a company like LiveOps and have paid people who work out of their homes and read scripts. Then on the train ride back they turned most all the seats around so people could be riding forward facing. I was no longer near my family across the aisle. They really don't offer enough information and then they have unwanted surprises later. I realize some of the workers on the train are volunteers. And most know the history but I was sad about lack of customer service for people that don't live in town or this is their first experience with the railroad. Also during the murder mystery the Granddaughter of our car assistant who was a "helper" stood in front of the actors and was very annoying. I have pictures so I cant be contradicted. So sad for all the money I spent and I did not have a good time.
