I think I found my new favorite afterwork bar. Located in the DeKalb market, surrounded by various options of good eats, Understudy is definitely a great place for drinks and catching up with friends. I went there on a Friday evening and there was a live DJ playing old school hip-hop and R&B. I asked the bartender for suggestions and he made me a pomegranate martini. It was delicious! They also allowed us to grab food in the food court and bring it in to eat, which was a plus. They have happy hour from 4 to 7 PM.
We hosted a welcome dinner at the Understudy Bar the night before our son's wedding. We had 110 people at this dinner and everyone complimented us on the choice of venue. The place is amazing, the food delicious, the drinks plentiful. But the real kudos goes to Mina Abdelsayed, who worked with us for months to make the evening a success. He and his employees went over and above to help kick off a great weekend in style. Thank you!!
I went here on a Friday afternoon and was pleased to see they're back in action. My friend and I were impressed with the friendly bartenders/staff including the great recommendation for the drinks we ordered AND their overall attentiveness. The music was great too, not whisper-mode but loud enough for it to be a vibe. The space is huge with cool dimmed lighting which is, again, a vibe. Come here with 1 friend or 20 friends, you will have a great time.
Music great other then that my gin and tonic had no lemon or lime nor a straw! Horrible customer service they won’t be receiving anymore of my money! Paid for my drink and left didn’t even drink it!

Came here instead of my regular. Hidden gem for sure, come on Wednesdays for Terrence. Objectively good music and drinks at a decent price. Top shelf selection is solid.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Amazing Artistic bartender, Abraham! He makes the space a pleasure. Because there is a bar area and an open court for dancing or lounging, think about installing some soundproof curtains. The dance music on Latin nights is sooooo loud that it bleeds into the bar area which already has a playlist. It's just too much, too loud. Also, to the owner, consider lengthen extending your closing time on Thursdays - Saturdays & perhaps some theme nights, especially for football and boxing, your bar would profit well.

Came here for a drink on a not busy Wednesday night. There were several people behind the bar, though it appeared most of them didn’t work there and were just on their phones. Despite not being busy, the service was insanely slow and I literally had to call out to the bartender to put in my drink order after he walked by me, at a nearly empty bar, several times. The drink was fine, but not enough to make up for the slow service. The weirdest part was that when we were ready to close out, we were told by the person behind the bar that we had to wait for the bartender to return. It was about a 15 minute wait - what do they do whenever the bartender takes a break? Everything just stays on hold? It was a weird experience. I wouldn’t go back.
Great music and dj but no food served make sure you eat before you drink there and great ambiance
