As a major referral center for children with complex medical and surgical conditions, N.C. Children's Hospital is nationally recognized as one of the country's best comprehensive care centers for the most critically ill and injured children.
As a top-tier academic medical center, UNC Children's protects the health of children throughout North Carolina and beyond, no matter how critical or rare their challenges. More than merely treating patients, we uphold a four-tiered mission to "CARE," aligning clinical care, advocacy, research, and education to deliver world-class, patient- and family-centered care—always regardless of a family's ability to pay.
UNC Children's offers complete inpatient and outpatient care at our state-of-the-art clinical home, N.C. Children's Hospital, a part of UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. We also bring leading-edge care closer to home through more than two dozen satellite outpatient clinics located throughout North Carolina and a partnership with New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Patient and Family Care:
UNC Children's clinical home, N.C. Children’s Hospital, has 150 inpatient beds. These include a 64-bed inpatient unit; an 8-bed Children’s Intermediate Care Center, or CICC unit; a 58-bed Newborn Critical Care Center; and a 20-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, or PICU. The hospital also has an 8-bed Children's Short Stay Unit for children requiring less than 24 hours of inpatient care.
N.C. Children's Hospital offers “one-stop health care” for children and their families: pediatric clinics are housed under the same roof and feature child-friendly treatment areas. The operating rooms and holding areas are child-specific in décor and equipment.
All inpatient unit rooms are private and designed to feel as much like home as possible. They feature private bathrooms with tubs and showers; laminated walls so children can display artwork, get-well cards and photographs; and convertible sofas to accommodate parents staying with their child. Specialty-units like the Newborn Critical Care Center and PICU offer family sleep rooms.
Inpatients have access to the Children's Hospital's supervised play facilities, which include a two-story, indoor play atrium, a music room, and teen activity center. These areas provide a healing environment where children can relieve the stress and anxiety associated with hospitalization.
The Children's Hospital also offers a state accredited Hospital School for children in grades K-12. The Hospital School provides teachers and a full-time principal to help children keep up with their classroom studies during hospital stays and ease the transition back to the child's home school.
Outpatient Care:
N.C. Children's Hospital's outpatient offerings in Chapel Hill include general and primary care clinics under the direction of the general pediatrics and adolescent medicine division and subspecialty care in the aforementioned pediatric subspecialties. Satellite outpatient sites include the N.C. Children's Specialty Clinic on the Rex Healthcare campus in Raleigh, an extension of N.C. Children's Hospital's outpatient clinic in Chapel Hill, in addition to more than two dozen remote clinics in places like Alamance, Asheville, Cary, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Lumberton, Rutherfordton, and Wilmington.
