Upper Sioux Agency State Park

Story

Upper Sioux Agency State Park contains the site of the Upper Sioux or Yellow Medicine Agency. The park was established in 1963 to preserve and interpret the remains of the old Agency site. The park covers 1,280 acres and offers diversity: open prairie knolls, bluffs, and cool, wooded slopes. From the vistas, visitors enjoy the trails which are ideal for horseback riding, hiking, skiing, and snowmobiling. The park also offers a huge sliding hill for winter fun.

To the lady who wrote a bad review ---How can you write a bad review about the mosquitoes? They are a part of nature, something that every camper has to deal with. Suggestion - bring a bug net, hang it over your sleeping area! OVERALL - this park is an elite specimen of just how excellent and well-maintained a state park can be. This wonderful, all-be-it HOT (sometimes), park is beautiful. The recreation of the sioux agency is a great way to spend a Saturday. Take time to enjoy the fact that this piece of land might be the most important in the state. Take time to enjoy the Tipi experience, it was a transformative one for me and my lady friend. We enjoyed the long strolls along the river trail. ONE THING YOU MUST DO - take time to drive a little ways down the road to the horse camp - look for a small make-shift parking lot that over looks the Yellow Medicine River. This view, in my humble opinion - is this most breath-taking scenery in all of the state parks! It will move you.

Very large restored prairie with nice native plants. Looks like more areas are slowly being restored as well. Personally I think the most scenic time of year here would be late September when the leaves and prairie are turning colors but I have only been here once in mid August. Some campsites have little or no shade so it can get a little warm in this spots.

Excellent place to go hiking with trees, prairie, hills, mosquitos, and mosquitos. It might be worth mentioning there are a lot of mosquitos.
