This place is amazing!! So beautiful, so fun! A definite must see. The visitors center was very crowded and busy. But once you get out to the dunes you feel like you're in your own world. I'd recommend watching the movie in the visits center to learn how it formed. Very fascinating!! And bring a plastic bottomed sled. We played, sled, walked around for hours. Don't forget sunblock and water!! Even a beach umbrella would've been handy. White Sands is a definite all day fun and must see! You won't regret it!!

You go and sit in a sand dune. But it's the coolest sand dune ever! Drive all the way to the back of the park and pick out your own private dune if it's not too busy, or try one of the hikes closer to the entrance. Such a cool experience! Bring something to sled on, otherwise you can "rent" from the gift shop for $15 ($20 to buy and $5 to return). Occasionally closed temporarily while missile tests are happening nearby.

This place is a rare and beautiful place. Whether you just drive around it and get out at specific stopping points or rent disks to slide down the dunes, it is a wonderful experience. There are picnic spots with barbeque stands available. The hiking is amazing, but you should be prepared. I got a little burned just with an overcast day. If you are a photographer the opportunities to photograph are endless. My favorite ended up being a pocket gopher, but the many changes in clouds and skies were amazing too. The sand is very fine so it gets into everything! This is well worth going to if you are in the area. The park service does a great job of explaining the park and leading walks in the park. I wish I could have spent more time, but any amount of time is worth it. (About 45 minutes min to drive around the park).

I loved sledding and not having sand stick to you because you aren’t on a beach getting wet. It was otherworldly, absolutely amazing. The only one of its kind, you’ll learn of it’s origin and history in the welcome center near the entrance and get to have fun until dusk. Entrance was cheap at only $5 for each adult and the entrance is good for 6 days, so you could have a few days there for one price. I loved it, definitely recommend!

This is a fascinating place to visit. When you finally get deep into the park, you are surrounded by a sea of huge dunes, stretching off in all directions. The stark white of the material of these dunes, composed entirely of gypsum, not sand, gives the place an otherworldly character. Great for hiking, relaxing, and picture-taking, visiting is a unique experience that you will remember. If you bring kids, rent or buy sleds at the gift shop and they can slide down the dunes as if they were snow.
