Once at the counter, the  process was smooth and quick.  The time to get to the counter...  Almost double what I expected.  I was there is no December 28, 2017.  A holiday period, but a workday and mid morning.  The wait was unacceptable.

We rented a one way rental to FLL airport, the rates were better than I had expected.

Had the worst experiences ever at this Avis Location. Don’t rent with this company at MIA airport. We got a representative named Maria,  she was rude, arrogant, and had no reason to be hired. We rented an SUV and we got to the counter they did not have any available and she did not want to upgrade us for a bigger car but she wanted to upsell me this upgrade. It took over an hour for us to get the car we booked. Then tire time she was speaking to colleagues and had no interest in trying to help us solve this issue. It makes you feel like you’re not in America when you rent from this company at Miami international Airport.

...everyone who likes to pay over $1000 more than written on the contract should rent a car from AVIS…

This summer we travelled to the US on a business trip. A car from AVIS Miami Airport was booked for us by the office. On arrival we asked for an upgrade to a slightly larger class.
It was not a problem at all, and without saying anything the agent wanted to charge an upgrade fee which was more than twice as high as the original rate!

Thankfully, we discovered this issue before signing the contract. After the intervention, the rate was adjusted and the overall extra charge for the upgrade was going to be $450, as confirmed by the agent several times.
On the way to our destination we realized that on the written contract for the second and third month the upgrade fee was still different from the agent’s clear verbal agreement. This left us with an upgrade fee of $1035 plus taxes. Unable to reach any human being on the helpline (only computers and busy signals) we were forced to grudgingly accept this higher rate after a few weeks.

The second surprise came with the bill. The actual amount charged for the upgrade was even $2100!!
After half a year of frustrating attempts to resolve this issue and to be reimbursed the difference between the written contract and the actual charge, we are about to give up. It is nearly impossible to get a useful answer from any Avis customer service. Even though we were [surprisingly] informed 1.5 months ago that a refund of $428 was made (about 30% of the mischarged amount), we have never received this money up to now!

Our conclusion:
-> Never trust ANY verbal statements of Avis agents, always read every word on every page of your contract. If there are verbal statements, let them be written down or do not accept them.
-> If it is not a matter of life or death, do not rent a car with Avis – choose another company! Because you most likely won’t be able to even get what is written on your contract. Avis Customer Service will simply ignore you.

From international terminal a bit far a walk, but otherwise location well organized. Waiting time often too long due to lack of staff. Staff very helpful and friendly. Was compensated with an upgrade. Will come again. Pity rentals longer than 30 days rather complicated. Am often 5 or 6 weeks.
