Story

The Caldwell Zoo is an 85acre zoo located in the city of Tyler, Texas. It features animals from all over the world. The Caldwell Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).HistoryThe zoo had its origins in the Child Development Laboratory, which was started in 1937 and was operated by the Hogg Foundation and the American Association of University Women of Tyler. It was run by David King Caldwell and his wife, who brought in many animals for the enjoyment of the children. The zoo was officially opened on its current site in 1953. By 1967, the zoo featured over 500 animals from 87 different species. In 1970, the zoo was broken into, and several animals were killed. This prompted the children of the area to collect money to help restore things. Enough money was raised for the zoo to acquire an African elephant and was the catalyst to modernize the entire zoo. The city granted an additional to the zoo in 1976, and a large, long-term expansion project was undertaken. A new elephant enclosure was built, and giraffes were added in 1978. In 1983 a 15acre native Texas area was opened, and in 1984 reptile and aquarium sections were opened. In 1987 major reconstruction of the African exhibits was completed, creating large pasture areas and an overlook. Throughout the 90s, more improvements were added. In 2002, a new veterinary hospital was completed, along with brooding areas, and a quarantine facility. The zoo now houses a "Wild Bird Walkabout" featuring over 400 parakeets and cockatiels. Bird, otter and penguin presentations have also expanded, allowing for the further education of the public.

The gar tank is amazing!!! Also loved seeing the catfish/koi pond and all of the different species of birds. Especially the bald eagle. Truly amazing. Will definitely go back anytime I'm in the area. Oh and the plant life is so breathtaking and plentiful. Definitely a beautiful zoo.

Medium sized zoo, but a fun place to visit. Priced reasonably & matched the amount of time spent there. Fun place to take kids! The zoo was pretty smelly the day we went. We skipped entirely through the building with the penguins because it smelled so bad it was hard to breathe in there. Compared to some bigger zoos I've been to, the animal selection was pretty small, but the walking paths were nice & besides the smelly areas the zoo was very clean.

We love this zoo! We drive 40 min each way to come - and even if we're only here for an hour it is worth it. Beautifully laid out, a great variety of animals, and always pleasant surprises - from baby monkeys to playful baby cheetahs to new lion cubs. They do a great job and well worth the annual pass for our family.

This is by far the best zoo I've been to in the last 10 years. The only other zoo that compares would be the Audubon zoo in New Orleans, Louisiana. The enclosures are gorgeous and the animals are awesome. The staff is friendly, and the animals seem to enjoy themselves as well. Most of the time when I go to a zoo I feel sorry for the animals, but not at this one!! I was really impressed with the entire facility and the prices are very reasonable too. We took our time going through and spent an easy 3 and a half hours in the park.

We have a membership here and go at least once a week. The newly remodeled areas are great and my son loves the Giraffe overlook. While it is pricey to feed them, it is a great experience!
