Charlie Gitto's On the Hill

About

Charlie Gitto’s On the Hill is a landmark for fine Italian dining in
The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis, Mo.

Story

At a Charlie Gitto’s restaurant, guests are number one. From the moment they arrive at our casually elegant establishments, we present warm, attentive and personalized service. Always on-hand is a professionally-trained sommelier to help diners perfectly complement their meal with a bottle from our wine list, which literally features hundreds of selections.

While Italian/Sicilian preparations have made Charlie Gitto’s a name known coast-to-coast, our menu also presents an array of signature steaks, veal, seafood, pizzas, salads, appetizers and desserts, such as homemade gelato and Italian cookies.

For more than 30 years, Charlie Gitto’s On the Hill has been a landmark for fine Italian dining in The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis, Mo. Opened by Charlie Gitto Jr. at 5226 Shaw Ave. in 1981, the restaurant still operates today at its original location.

Toasted ravioli is a signature St. Louis dish – and its birthplace is the kitchen of Charlie Gitto’s On the Hill when in 1947 a chef at Angelo’s (the name of the restaurant at that time) accidentally dropped a ravioli in hot oil instead of water.

In 2004, Charlie Gitto Jr. opened a second location At Hollywood Casino in Maryland Heights, Mo. Most recently, he introduced his iconic Italian fare to his hometown of Chesterfield, Mo. in a fourth location, From the Hill.

Food: Some of the best Italian food in St. Louis, and very good for outside the Northeast/West Coast. I had the Veal Milanese which was tender enough and had the bone in (great cut of meat). The meat is top quality, the preparation is authentic. There is a little something missing, but not much. Will not be the best Italian food of your life, but outside of Italy and traditional Italian communities this is one of the best. Service: Very professional and attentive Atmosphere: Very dark and a little stuffy, but a great traditional vibe of the good old days of fancy.

This place is nice if you recently received a bonus on your paycheck. Otherwise I wouldn't really bother. We went for our third wedding anniversary and chose it based on the reviews. I'm not sure if St. Louis just has bad Italian food or what but the reviews about best Italian in St. Louis did not live up. A dinner for two we paid over $100 to eat here. My ravioli had so much sauce I couldn't even find the ravioli! My wife ordered the chicken Marsala and while it had good flavor it was very skimpy. The salad is nearly as expensive as the food, so heads up. Outside of that, it's a decent atmosphere. Slightly small but cozy enough. The patio looked a little better. The service was good, but seemed to check in about every two minutes which to me was a little much. But at least they were very professional and kind. For the price I would expect much more. If you're just looking to impress it may be the place for you.

Fantastic. Old school upscale Italian dinning. Coat check, manager (owner?) comes around and talks with all guests. Had a wonderful night. Food was delicious too.

I came today, on the fifth year anniversary of my mother's passing. Charlie Gitto's was a favorite restaurant of hers and our regular Mother's Day eatery. It was a solo tribute meal in her honor and it could not have been more perfect. My server, Don, was incredibly nice and perfectly attentive but not at all overbearing. The food, as always was delicious. I wanted the shrimp appetizer but also wanted their worlld-famous toasted ravioli. Don't suggested that I order the ravioli by the piece instead of the full order (as to not fill myself before my actual dinner). It was a great suggestion. Even though I ordered only four pieces ravioli instead of the whole order of eight and ate only two of the three shrimp, I could barely make a dent in my seafood risotto. The shrimp are a worthy meal alone. The seafood risotto was DELICIOUS. I was told that it will heat up nicely I'm ready for tomorrow's lunch already!

This is a fantastic classic Italian restaurant. The pasta and sauces are made in-house just as it has for more than fifty years. If you want classic Italian cuisine and the famous toasted ravioli then you have chosen the right place.
