As always, submitting a visa application is very stressful because your passport is taken from you. I went to the consulate in Chicago yesterday. The process was definitely a little confusing, but we got everything in and Mariana was very helpful to tell me what was needed. Here are a few tips for online: 1. Get the e-visa if you are only going to Brazil short term and have a US passport 2. Fill out full visa application for long term visa. On the top right, you can change the form to English. 3. At the end of the form, you will have to attach your passport photo (very recent photo), a digital picture of your signature, your arrival/departure flights (with confirmation numbers), photo of the information page on the passport, and drivers license. (We also added hotel itinerary). You will need to add 3 recent bank statements if you're staying more than 30 days. Here are a few tips when you get to consulate: 1. Print out the receipt from the online form, write in your signature and paste a 2" by 2" photo on the photo area. 2. Take your passport and flight itineraries 3. 3 recent bank statements (if staying more than 30 days) 4. USPS money order of $160 5. It will take 10 days to process and if there is any error you can come back and reapply, and that will only take 3 days. You can also check the status of your visa online and pick up when it's ready. Hope that was helpful! Have fun in Brazil!

I wish I could give them 0 stars. My experience applying for a tourist visa was an absolute nightmare of incompetence and lack of customer service entirely. My first attempt at applying I drove 5 hours (each way) to deliver all my required documents in person. The woman I spoke to in the visa office was friendly, looked over my paperwork, and told me everything looked good and I would hear back in 3 weeks. 3 weeks later I received everything back in the mail as DENIED for a trivial reason I could have easily fixed the moment I dropped off my paperwork. Let alone a simple phonecall or email to remedy the small mistake. So now 3 weeks are gone and my application fee non-refundable. After waiting for an email response (the only way you can reach ANYONE) I'm told to reapply from scratch. Ok. I mail all my paperwork back, triple checked. 3 FULL weeks later I receive an envelope with merely my passport and no visa to be found. Nothing explaining if I was approved or denied. I contact them via email again and wait 24 hours between each half-***ed reply. They are telling me I was approved and the visa must be inside. Its not.... My passport is completely blank. How can they FORGET to put the visa inside? The ONE THING they are there to do in the visa office... I'm told to come back to Chicago or mail my passport back to them (at my expense of course) so they can check for themselves. At this point my flight leaves in a week. I work during week days so I cannot possibly spend 10 hours driving to meet their (RIDICULOUS) office hours of 9-11am (???). I do not have enough time left to wait for it to be mailed, them probably taking weeks to even look at it, and likely failing to remedy the situation for the 3rd time. They took zero responsibility for any of this over the course of our emails. This place reflects incredibly poorly on the country of Brazil in my eyes and I can't see myself ever applying again for a tourist visa after this experience. I'm now out well over $250 in application fees and prepaid envelopes and not to mention my very expensive plane ticket to Brazil which is now useless and non-refundable. If by some reason you are forced to do business with this location start a YEAR in advance, trust me!

It's like they look for things that are wrong to deny your requests, they are also not very knowledgeable with information they give. The Miami consulate is 100 times better!

Me living in Minneapolis my only option for getting a visa to Brazil was to mail everything to this place. Unfortunately if you live in the midwest this will also be your only option. Send your visa documents in AT LEAST A MONTH IN ADVANCE. Website says 15 business days, but THEY CAN PROLONG YOUR VISA APPLICATION FOR NO REASON, WITHOUT NOTICE. I was travelling to Brazil with friends from all over the country, and I was the only one that had to go through this consulate. My friends applied for their Visas either in San Franciso or New York, which apparently you can get in under 7 days at both places. There is a lot you need to submit with your passport including $160 USPS money order, travel itinerary, pre-paid return envelope, NEW passport 2x2 picture, drivers license, etc. That is all a huge pain but still fine, I diligently went through everything I needed to send and mailed it the 1st week of December. I sent everything overnight and included an overnight return envelope. I waited 3 weeks and it was getting close to my trip. If you call and go through all the menus and recordings you will be instructed to email the consulate, and then the machine hangs up on you. I started emailing and was getting canned responses of "We don't expedite visas" and "This application is under review". I thought it was a computer answering emails. Finally on my 3rd email (each takes 2 days to get a response) they said "This application is scheduled to be reviewed on Dec. 29th" So guess what instead of going through applications as they get them, it sounds like they just sit on a desk for AT LEAST 15 days before someone even cracks the envelope. Dec. 29th is 24 days after I overnighted my application. I begged via email to have it reviewed and never got a response. I got my visa back stamped and ready to go nearly a month after I sent the paperwork. It took someone what 10 minutes to review? I had to cancel my flight and my entire Christmas vacation plans, while my friends went without me, because of this place. If you follow the rules you will get your passport and visa back but expect at least a month if you mail it, and don't expect anyone here to do anything to help you, even if you are after their "15 business day" time frame. No one here cares, missing an entire trip ($2,500 plane ticket) and ruining a Christmas means nothing to them.

Applied for a visa. It's been almost a month and they are still holding my passport and my case is pending. What level of incompetence is this? Reflects very poorly on Brazil. If it is this bad at an institution that supposed to represent a country abroad, how bad is the bureaucracy in Brazil? Unbelievable. Don't make travel arrangement months in advance if you're applying for a visa at this consulate.
