I recently visited the consulate to request a VISA for my girlfriend, and the experience couldn't have been more positive. the staff was courteous and professionals. Also when I had to call them back a couple of days later, they provide the requested details in a nice manner. I am wondering if the negative comments are the result of people visiting the consulate not prepared or without any preliminary check of the required information.

My daughter is studying abroad in Italy this year. We went to get her student visa in June. BE PREPARED. Before your appointment, search the Italian Consulate of Chicago website for a list of everything you need to apply. It is an extensive list and it it almost impossible to find, but it’s in there somewhere. The part about “no fee for a student visa” is incorrect. The fee is 50 euros. Bring your money order. The man at the Consulate said she was only able to apply for a visa for fall semester as she didn’t yet have her return flight booked for spring semester. He told her she needed to schedule another appointment in December to get a student visa for spring semester. She made her appointment as instructed, but needed to reschedule since we were traveling out of the country at the end of December and she needed to keep her passport until after our vacation. She wasn’t able to reschedule online since the earliest appointment available was too close to her departure for spring semester. They are IMPOSSIBLE to contact. They do not answer the phone. They do not return emails. As a result, I spent countless hours on the phone with the US Passport Agency figuring out how to get her another passport since the Italian consulate would have hers. We drove the 6 hours back to Chicago in December. The SAME EXACT MAN who told her she needed a December appointment looked at her and said “why do you keep coming back here? You can’t keep getting student visas! Why didn’t you extend your visa when you were in Italy?” (Stupid American!) Hmmm...maybe because you never told her she could do that, and told her she had to come back in December? She told him she had emailed 6 weeks earlier about the situation, with no reply. He said “we are very busy. No time for emails”. She explained that she needed her passport to travel in 4 days and requested a January appointment. He told her to come back in January and said “you don’t need an appointment”. She had him write that on a piece of paper. By this point we had no faith in him. She returned 3 weeks later and he asked if she had an appointment. She handed him the note. He asked “why are you back? What were you missing the last time?” Nothing. We’re back because you couldn’t take 5 minutes to answer her email. In summary...3 nights in a hotel. Several hundred dollars spent. 36 hours in the car. Countless headaches. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE.

My experiences with the Consulate staff have been great! They mean business so DO NOT show up unprepared. Accept the fact that you are on foreign soil when you cross that threshold, so be respectful and they will respect you. People waste a lot of time looking for answers they can find somewhere else. If you state your business clearly, you'll get the results you're seeking.

47... I called 47 times during open hours. No one, not even one time, answered the phones and all I need is to ask one question so I can continue this process of trying to apply to an Italian university.
