About

Tom Colicchio's Flagship Restaurant. 3-Star NY Times and James Beard Award Winner. Simple, single ingredient driven, soulful dishes served family style.

Story

After citing morels as his favorite food in an interview, chef Tom Colicchio, then at the helm of Gramercy Tavern, got to thinking — Where can you go to eat just mushrooms, or order a bowl of sweet, tender peas when they’re at their best in early spring?

The idea of Craft evolved from there. This would be a restaurant that mimicked the experience of dining in someone’s home – simply prepared dishes highlighting pristine, seasonal ingredients served family-style; guests building their own plates from dishes brought to the center of the table.

“Simple doesn’t mean simplistic,” Tom says in his book, Think Like a Chef, and the food at Craft serves as proof. Perennial favorites include pan-roasted diver scallops, braised beef short ribs, and the bounty of Greenmarket sides in every season.

Craft received the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant nationwide in 2002 for its unique marriage of the finest ingredients, haute cuisine and family-style service enjoyed within the award-winning architectural design of Bentel and Bentel. New York Times critic, William Grimes awarded Craft three stars in 2001, an honor upheld by Sam Sifton in 2011.

This is my second time eating at Craft. Both times, everything tasted so good! The staff is super friendly. I will definitely go again.

Great food, but the service was very disappointing. We were waited on by three different servers, mostly because the server who greeted us and took our order was only ever seen again in passing, not even bothering to check in on us after the food arrived. Maybe it was just a bad sever or an off night, but we were very let down considering the high cost, the restaurant's high esteem and Tom Collichio' stellar reputation. I was just watching Top Chef (season 10 Restaurant Wars) and heard Tom say "You come for the food, but you come back for the service and hospitality." Sorry Tom, but you're right. I won't be returning.

I was completely disappointed with the gratin potatoes. They were underdone and not ANY seasoning. For someone who sends people home on Top Chef for these reasons I would never expect it in Tom Colicchio’s restaurant. Every other thing was really good. I was also completely disappointed when we tried to take my husband’s birthday menu the server told us he will give it to us at the end. Of course we completely forgot about it and he never gave it to us. We realized it about an hour later and 20 blocks away. I just wish the guy gave that to us when we wanted it.

Tried for Restaurant Week lunch and enjoyed the experience. Particularly the sweet potato soup! Upscale environment, average service.

This meal was worth the wait and price; you definitely need to make reservations well in advance but once you get in the door it's all worth it. Service was 10/10 (if not a little too familiar for my taste but I'm a kermudgin) , the wine list was a small novel and was extremely well balanced. Our cocktails took a little time to get to the table but after that the service was pretty quick, all the food was piping hot and delicious to a fault, and the coup de grace was the free muffin (cranberry citrus I think?) they hand you as you leave the restaurant to enjoy for breakfast the next morning . The muffin is awesome so don't turn it down
