Fantastic site. Glad we visited during the winter...little shade along the way might make it an uncomfortable visit in the warmer months. The three-mile (round trip) hike to the fort ruins and back, plus time to read the interpretive signs and check out the museum, took us (family with kids) about three hours. We were glad to have taken plenty of water. Ranger at the museum was friendly and knowledgeable. She helped us better understand the importance of the fort during the period it was active.

Beautiful hike, in one way and out another. Great visitor center. A must for Butterfield Overland stage and Geronimo history

Good hike from the parking lot to the ruins of the fort. Take plenty of water, there is not much shade. You will be able to see an old cemetery and the ruins of the old fort.

It was an awesome hike to get there, but not for anyone in bad health. Was an amazing fort in its heyday. The only bad thing is getting any handicapped folks from the upper parking to the visitors center in hard. Not wheelchair accessible s far as I could see.

Getting to Fort Bowie NHS might be challenging for some, the only reason why I didn’t post five stars. Depending on which side you enter to get to the trailhead, the roads are different —all dirt vs mostly paved. Choosing the paved road does add travel time, if coming from the west. Once you get to the small parking area, there is still a 1 1/2 mile (3 miles RT) trek to the site via the old Apache Pass road. Fort Bowie NHS was set up to give visitors a truer experience by hiking this original trail. Along this route, visitors walk through an area with other ruins including a stage coach station and the original Fort Bowie. For those that are handicapped, contact the park. Upon entering Fort Bowie at the visitor center (a great place to answer questions, view exhibits, and get information about area trails), one can take a short hike to the ruins of Fort Bowie. There is a lot of information/knowledge to be gained. So, If you’re interested in the history of the conflicts between the Chiricahua and Apache Nations and the soldiers once stationed here, it is a fantastic place to understand the logistics and daily lives involved. A minimum of two hours is needed RT this park/trail.
