About

Re-opened in 2013 under Chef Anthony Chittum with a Greek & Italian inspired menu featuring the finest products of the Mid-Atlantic foodshed.

Story

In November 2013, the historic Iron Gate re-opened under the direction of Executive Chef Anthony Chittum.

Until its recent closing, the Iron Gate was the District’s oldest continuously operating restaurant. Its kitchen and dining room occupy a building that once served as the stables for the townhouse’s owner, General Nelson Miles, a cavalry officer in the Civil War who later became the Secretary of the Army. In 1922, the entire property was purchased by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which opened the Iron Gate Inn in 1923. The Federation continues to use the townhouse as its international headquarters, and Chef Chittum and his team are honored to be the new stewards of this unique landmark.

The original carriageway houses the bar and a year-round dining space, while the courtyard, overhung with grapevines and a century-old wisteria, features a protective awning allowing for (nearly) all-weather outdoor dining.

A native of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Chef Chittum has earned a reputation not only for his cooking, but also for his commitment to sourcing from an ever-expanding network of local farmers, watermen, and food artisans. Chittum and his team are revitalizing the Iron Gate with a menu that takes inspiration from the cuisines of Greece, Sicily, Sardinia, and Southern Italy, interpreting those traditions and techniques through the use of the finest products of the Mid-Atlantic foodshed.

I went here on a double-date because we lucked out on a prime time reservation and I had heard good things. However, I don’t think it lived up to the hype. We probably spent $600 between a 2 bottles of wine and the suggested portion of shared plates for the table, and not only was it not incredibly impressive/different, but we all ended up hungry and having a second meal. Portions flavor could definitely be improved given the price. What it lacks in substance, it definitely makes up for in ambiance. It was a beautiful evening (highly recommend going when you can sit outside) and the staff is very attentive and knowledgeable.

I came to Iron Gate after I gave up trying to find a bar in DuPont that wasn't insanely packed or one in which I didn't have to yell to talk to the person I'm with. Iron Gate fit the bill perfectly; you've got a long, narrow spot with a decently sized, quaint bar and a few tables on either end. The food is excellent-- it is pricey and portions are small but that's standard fare at this sort of establishment. The old fashioned that I had was very good and the wine selection is expansive. If you're looking for a place to take someone that's a bit more upscale and relaxed than your standard DC fare, Iron Gate is a solid bet (just be prepared to pay extra).

Great atmosphere with solid dishes and intriguing cocktails. Perfectly cooked octopus, unique broccoli anchovy bruschetta. Complimentary birthday cake too! Edit: Second visit we were seated 45 min after our res but the service was amazing to compensate. Favourite DC restaurant!

Great place to visit and we met the chef. Food is quite good and wonderful place to visit. Food is great. Would give 5 stars but couple of dishes had little too much yogurt; BUT again the food is REALLY good; including the personal service.

Our first experience here was really great - we did a 7 or so course tasting menu with wine pairings. Waaaay to much dessert. Some of the wines were good. Really nice portion sizes. Second time we had a large party on the garden patio and the food was good but service was missing. We still had a nice time. We considered having a large reception here but the communication has been poor so we're moving on to somewhere else. I'd probably still go here for a romantic dinner with my other half - but not to throw a party.
