John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County

Story

The John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital and also known as the New Cook County Hospital) is a public urban teaching hospital in Chicago that provides primary, specialty and tertiary healthcare services to the five million residents of Cook County, Illinois. The hospital employs 300 attending physicians and over 400 fellows and residents. The 1.2 million square foot, 464 bed hospital, located at 1901 W. Harrison Street, is a part of the 305 acre (1.2 km²) Illinois Medical District which is one of the largest concentrations of medical facilities in the world.Built in 1857, it was used as a teaching hospital by Rush Medical School until the Civil War, when it was transitioned to an army hospital. After the war, it continued its purpose as a center for medical education and founded the first medical internship in the country in 1866. By the 1900s, the best surgeons and physicians in Chicago volunteered their services at this expanding hospital which was completed in 1916. Regarded as one of the world's greatest teaching hospitals, many interns, residents, and graduate physicians came to see the medical and surgical advances. Innovations included the world's first blood bank and surgical fixation of fractures. The New Cook County Hospital was completed in December 2002, and is housed in a facility located adjacent to the old hospital building.County General Hospital, a fictional hospital that serves as the setting for the NBC serial medical drama ER, is loosely based on this hospital. Cook County Hospital is also used in the 1993 movie The Fugitive.

Had a terrible encounter with an officer Lewis when bringing in my boyfriend for seizures and myself for chest pain on July 11, 2017. My boyfriend had given me permission to be with him (which he never had to do before or after this encounter mind you, they can even check the camera), but apparently that officer didn't like the fact that my boyfriend was talking back to the women doing the intake and telling her that I was his girlfriend and I can be with him (I also had all his documentation in my bag which I was trying to give to them and was trying to tell them what happened since my boyfriend just had FOUR SEIZURES, but I guess knowing what is going on with the patient to treat them properly doesn't matter because they just kept telling me to step away, which I did). So Lewis started arguing with my boyfriend. I had already moved away and was asking Lewis to please stop yelling at my boyfriend because he just had FOUR SEIZURES... Lewis said he didn't care, he was wasn't talking to me, and he can go to another hospital. Then once doing my intake, I look over to get his information to report him and he threatens me with "disorderly"... for what? All I did was look over to get his badge information and after he said that he was going to take me in for "disorderly" I asked the woman in front taking my information if I was being "disorderly" and she said nothing. I report this "officer" and receive a letter saying that "... as a healing environment the officer's immediate response was to restore order to the area, deescalate a tense situation, as well as maintain a safe environment. In this respect the officer's response was appropriate." How on this Earth is any of what that officer said and did appropriate? How is telling me that he doesn't care whether or not my boyfriend has another seizure appropriate? How is threatening me with "disorderly" when all I did was ask him to stop yelling at my boyfriend appropriate? How was "officer" Lewis creating a "healing environment... [restoring] order to the area, [deescalating] a tense situation," when he started the entire argument, "as well as [maintaining] a safe environment?" What's the point of having a place to go to to report individuals that clearly do not care about patients who come into that ER department if all they have to do is lie to cover their butts. They should be required to wear video cameras when on duty, for situations like this, so there can be no way for them to cover up what they did. They are already being recorded on cameras overhead so this way there is audio involved with it. My boyfriend even asked if he needed to report the officer as well since he was also being attacked by Lewis and was told he didn't have to, my thorough letter was enough. I honestly think they were just not trying to have 2 complaints on him in one night, even though my boyfriend and I had different interactions with this "officer". I am extremely disappointed and disgusted in the behavior of this so- called "officer" and the trustworthiness of the staff at Stroger. Avoid coming here if at all possible. Clearly if they are in the wrong they will do whatever it takes to cover up what they did. Nobody deserves to have that said about someone they love or be threatened with being arrested for no reason. This is why people have problems with the police, there are some people out there that think they are above the law and can do what they want. These people, like "officer" Lewis, give the true heroes a bad name.

I went to the Emergency Room yesterday September 15, 2017. I was accommodated right away with 2 staff at the front desk & was given my number, #128 & told to go wait at the next room. After 10 minutes, I heard my name right away, was interviewed for a few minutes by another staff, & was told to go to the emergency room. The nurse in the ER was really good & also the doctor , Dr. Rashid Kysia. After I was given my prescription, the doctor told me to go to the next room & had to be registered. The same thing, the lady staff in charge of my registration was also very good to me. After that, the ER nurse came back to me & showed me where to go to get my prescription medicines. Thanks to all the Emergency hospital staff. I might have not known their names because I didn't bother to ask but these goes to all those who were on duty yesterday, September 15, 2017.

UPDATE: The director of facilities Samuel Williams, patient relations coordinators Barbara Stroud and Nekesha Tharbs, and security all look out to cover their butts and any serious mess up that happens. The director of facilities scheduled a meeting over the phone and then canceled last minute with an excuse about having a meeting (then why schedule the call). Barbara and Nekesha both pushing he had a meeting, and they didn’t call to tell me, I called 10 mins after the conference call should’ve started. So, I find his number through public records and call, he picks up immediately... what about that meeting?...He proceeds to say he will not discuss this over the phone (again why schedule a conference call if you don’t talk about these things over the phone), he pushes to get me off the phone saying he will schedule a face to face, but he only schedules a meeting only because I call the alderman. Seriously no calls were made until after I call the alderman. Within 5 mins of making the call to the alderman I get a call from Stroger. Guess who actually got a meeting set up... While Barbara and Nekesha are telling me about the meeting they ask where I found Samuel Williams number. Did you think I was just going to believe that lie of having a meeting? The day of the meeting arrives, Samuel is late, and I’m told by Barbara that I cannot record the meeting, it’s against their policy, they have security monitoring video (how does that hold you responsible for what you say?), even though it is for my protection and records, but I was told I would be getting a letter stating that recording during the meeting was not allowed and why. They all stated there was no cover-up, especially Samuel Williams who said he doesn’t do cover-ups he fires people... If you have nothing to hide why could I not record? If you have nothing to hide why was I not given a policy statement at the end of the meeting like Barbara said to show why I can’t record? If you aren hiding anything why have I still not received a letter stating why I couldn’t recorded? Luckily I still have a snippet of her saying to turn it off, but still where is my letter? Instead I get a letter stating Lewis was still in the right for how he treated my partner and I, and they make sure to put in there that there is only video monitoring not audio... but you can’t state why I couldn’t record the meeting? This place is run by shady people and don’t think going to patient relations will do anything. It’s just to keep you quiet and feel like your doing something, these people could care less about how you are treated, they get paid either way. While the less fortunate exist these people will get to do whatever they want and act however they want. Such a disgrace, the people deserve better.

The nurses here need to retake their basic sanitation and blood borne pathogens courses. My friend's mom stayed here a few days on the eighth floor. When testing her blood sugar and giving her an injection they didn't wash their hands or wear gloves. Cross-contaminination and serious bacterial infections, such as MRSA, are a huge risk in any hospital. Please wash your hands and wear gloves; these are two very easy things to do and prevent further issues.
