Among the greatest landmarks in America. This monument has a lot of history. It was built over more than 25 years.
A subtle interesting thing you can see a change in the color of the stones at about 1/3rd of its hight from the bottom. This was because that stone at the bottom had finished during the time of construction and it was restarted only 25 years later. At the moment it is closed for entry due to some technical fault in the elevators. It is visible from all parts of the national mall and around.

I love walking around the National Mall, and the Washington Monument is figuratively as well as literally in the middle of it all. It is an amazing view at the base of the monument looking up and all around at all of the sites in every direction. The view across the WWII memorial and reflection pool to the Lincoln Memorial is amazing, especially in a short day sunset in late fall.

You feel a sense of accomplishment standing there looking at the monument. Very peaceful yet exciting at the same time. Beautiful scenery all around you. Great place.

Such a beautiful monument, and an iconic site in Washington D.C. The grounds are well-maintained, making this a great area to sit for a picnic (pack your own, or buy from one of the food trucks that are usually in the area during the day). If you get the chance to view the monuments at night, I highly suggest taking the time to do so. They are all lit up and it is a beautiful sight!

I have a lot of wonderful memories here with our family when Dad was assigned to the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC from 1967 to 1974. My brother and I were kids - watching fireworks on the 4th of July, picnics and excursions. Thank you Mom and Dad for the beautiful life you gave us...
