Story

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is a presidential memorial in Washington D.C. dedicated to the memory of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, and to the era he represents. For the memorial's designer, landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, the memorial site represents the capstone of a distinguished career, partly because the landscape architect had fond memories of Roosevelt, and partly because of the sheer difficulty of the task. Dedicated on May 2, 1997 by President Bill Clinton, the monument, spread over 7.5acre, traces 12 years of the history of the United States through a sequence of four outdoor rooms, one for each of FDR's terms of office. Sculptures inspired by photographs depict the 32nd president alongside his dog Fala. Other sculptures depict scenes from the Great Depression, such as listening to a fireside chat on the radio and waiting in a bread line, a bronze sculpture by George Segal. A bronze statue of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt standing before the United Nations emblem honors her dedication to the UN. It is the only presidential memorial to depict a First Lady. Considering Roosevelt's disability, the memorial's designers intended to create a memorial that would be accessible to those with various physical impairments. Among other features, the memorial includes an area with tactile reliefs with braille writing for people who are blind. However, the memorial faced serious criticism from disabled activists. Vision-impaired visitors complained that the braille dots were improperly spaced and that some of the braille and reliefs were mounted eight feet off of the ground, placing it above the reach of most people.

FDR is one of America's most well known President and this memorial is a very nice tribute to him. This memorial is easily accessible and definitely worth stopping and seeing if you are on the national mall. Parking can be tough I suggest using the D.C. hopper bus system which will pick you up and drop you off within a short walking distance.

DC is my favourite city. It is filled with memorials and monuments. The FDR memorial has to be my favourite memorials I have been to. The way it encapsulate the breadlines that the people in the great depression were standing in to get food well also working in the little details about FDR's presidency. The statue of the man listening to FDR's famous fireside chats to the his wife Eleanor and dog fala by his side. Fun fact this is one of the only memorial that encourages people to bring their dogs on a leash of course. The amount of symbolic details that went into this memorial is amazing and I know it is quite a stretch from the Mall but it isn't to bad of a walk and it is highly worth it.

Beautiful memorial that gave a great scenic view of the area. Those who love waterfalls will really like this display. Also, a special thanks to the US military helicopter pilot that saw me taking pictures of him and turned to make a direct fly-over. That made my day!

A very large monument without a very clear story or learning objective. Seemed more like a modern art exhibit featuring FDR. Still worth going to, but not a must see. The MLK Jr memorial is very close by, and it is a much more interesting site to visit. It would probably be wise to get a few pamphlets or take a guided tour to make your experience more worthwhile.

Very well done memorial. The four rooms representing his terms do a great job of telling the story of his evolving and complicated presidency. The statue of FDR in the wheelchair was a blatant miss when it opened originally but has been corrected. Any memorial of him that does not address his disability is not honoring the full picture of the man. The inclusion of Eleanor is totally appropriate and should be expanded. As important as it was, she was more than an international diplomat and women’s advocate. She saw the greatness in him, and pushed him to become the compassionate statesman everyone remembers. Without her, FDR would have never entered public office after his paralysis.
