This is a hidden gem and I took my architecture loving 5 yr old here. He had a ball in the kids building area and also running around the magnificent courtyard inside. This is a neat place and has a royal feel to it while is usually not found in United States.

Went with my son's 3rd grade class' field trip recently. They did a nice job of teaching the kids about land use and urban planning. Also had fun crafting their own buildings with recyclable materials. Nicely done.

Many museums are found in the DC area including the National Archives, Aerospace Museum, and Natural Science. While all these are must sees for the masses and display a backbone in the development of this country in politics, technology, and science, none of them touch quite close home to the culture of American history. That is what the National Building Museum is capable of doing. Each exhibit displayed parts of human culture from the way mental illness and racial prejudices were dealt with in the past as well as how we live moving into the future. The various exhibits were extremely informational and each was able to pick into the lives of everyone and really stops to make you think: Where was the human race before? And how is it now? For a measly $7, I will be sure to return to this museum once again when I return to DC. Pictures are 2 shots of the central pillars. The exhibits are spread throughout rooms on the side.

Very impressive building on the inside. Its free to get into the lobby, but you have to pay to see anything else. We didn't go through the whole place, but from what we saw, the exhibits are for people REALLY into architecture, or young kids who want to play in the block area (which wasn't very impressive). Neither of which were worth the $34 price of admission for a family of 4. They also limit you to one 45 minute play session in one of the kids areas. They were preparing for some sort of fundraiser while we were there so we couldn't even enjoy the lobby. Maybe if they have some kind of kids event it might be worth it, but we were not impressed.

The large, open space inside the museum is magnificant with tremdous columns and beautiful arches. The building itself is a wonderful work of art with beautifully tiled floors, very nice staircases, and a large fountain in the middle of the main hall. The well done exhibits include home construction methods, numerous architectural models of noteworthy homes and buildings, an example of a compact yet highly functional urban home design, and paper models of many buildings from around the world. The atmosphere was very tranquil and enjoyable. The location is very convenient.
