So much to see and enjoy here! One of the many reasons you come to D.C. It is quite large so set aside a good amount of time to soak it all in. This museum is centrally located by the Chinatown metro stop on the red line. Very very easy to get to, across the street from the metro station. This museum contains a nice collection of American art, as well as portraits. Be sure to catch one of the tours. Our particular tour was guided by 3 different docents, each speaking about different pieces. The approach was generally to compare and contrast pieces. Additionally, the building itself has historic significance.

The artwork is amazing. I understand the guards are there doing their job. However, it can ruin an otherwise nice experience to have someone yelling "Keep it moving!" in your ear, when you're actively engaged with other patrons about a piece of art. I guess courteous customer service isn't part of the training. Or perhaps we're not meant to engage with the artwork or each other?

Favorite museum in D.C.! Wonderfully curated. Great event calendar, including a new regular feature of my calendar: Open Studio Fridays. This museum is coupled with the Smithsonian's American Art Museum to double your pleasure. The Atrium Courtyard is a perfect place for lunch or an escape from the city hustle and bustle. Excellent cafe.

One of my favorite places to hang out on a rainy day. Don't let the name fool you, you'll find more than just portraits here. The gallery is quite big and houses a beautiful collection of art work. Even if you are not into art, this is a great place to have a coffee in their atrium and calm down from the busy streets of DC. Best of all? Entrance is free.

I don't know how I missed visiting this museum on my previous trips to DC! Decided to stop in before heading to my hotel on my rainy arrival day. So much to see and read. A truly enjoyable visit despite the increased foot traffic due to the recent release of the Obama portraits. Stayed until closing, spending 6 hours here and didn't quite see everything. I plan to return the next time I'm in town.
