Story

The Smithsonian Institution Building, located near the National Mall in Washington, D.C. behind the National Museum of African Art and the Sackler Gallery, houses the Smithsonian Institution's administrative offices and information center. The building is constructed of Seneca red sandstone in the faux Norman style (a 12th-century combination of late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs; built in the Gothic and Romanesque revival styles) and is nicknamed The Castle. It was completed in 1855 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.HistoryThe Castle was the first Smithsonian building, designed by architect James Renwick, Jr., whose other works include St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery, also in Washington D.C. The building committee held a nationwide design competition in 1846 and selected Renwick's design by a unanimous vote. A cardboard model of Renwick's winning design survives and is on display in the Castle. Renwick was assisted by Robert Mills, particularly in the internal arrangement of the building.

Beautiful museum, great food court, but there are some kinks this *relatively * new museum needs to work out. There isn't a lot of content, so you could probably breeze through this quickly if you're in DC as a tourist and have limited time. The flow of the exhibits is disjoint, and I feel like the museum is focused too much on the American perspective than that of the native American peoples. This is a great place to chill, listen to the fountain and eat the food, but it almost feels more like an event space rather than a museum. I still love it, because it's such a gorgeous, peaceful and chill place.

This is a good museum if the first American peoples. There is a lot of good displays and some great history to learn from. There is an area for kids where they can play and touch things while they learn about history. Didn't get a chance to taste the food but it really looked delicious! Definitely worth a stop if the American Indian is something you are interested in!

One of my favorite building on the mall due to its interesting facade, the inside does not disappoint either. On the recommendation of the entryway guides we started at the top, but did not make it all the way through even two floors before closing. If you are interested at all in the history (I did not expect to be but was rather drawn in by the exhibits) then account for a full day here to see everything. I heard the food was excellent but did not get a chance to try it, so I'll have to plan on that on my return trip to finish reading everything.

Considering the history that native people have given to this country is measured in sheer tonnage, this is an amazing museum to see. The rotating exhibits allow for more than just a typical start and end date for history. This is the example of how to show the emotion in history and it could not be more fitting that it is for our native population. This is one of the places you must visit of you come to DC.

Great place to learn about the original inhabitants of our lands and see more about their culture. There are amazing exhibits here for you to view and being part of the Smithsonian, the quality is to be expected. Surprisingly the choices for food was great and as it was the start of the day for us, really helped to set our expectations high for the rest of the day. Hop on Hop off picked up right outside.
