The indoor butterfly pavilion is located inside of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. For some reason, the indoor butterfly pavilion got conflated with this place listing (an outdoor garden and a lovely one, at that). I submitted multiple edits to Google Maps informing them of this issue.... The indoor butterfly pavilion has many colorful butterflies on the loose in a humid, plant-filled mini ecosystem. Admission is $6 but Tuesdays are free!

Great exhibit, horrible staff. One young staff member discouraged any contact whatsoever with the butterfly's. Made for a very stressful environment.

Worth a detour from visiting museums to see mostly native plants and the wild butterflies and birds they support. Informative signage about habitats and plants are well labeled. Good place to get ideas for your own mid-Atlantic garden.

First thing you need to know: I LOVE BUTTERFLIES Each ticket is roughly $6, unless you plan to attend on Tuesdays (I think Tuesdays are free days). Once you enter the habitat (although it is quite small) you get the sense that you are in a different world immediately. There are all types of butterflies fluttering all around you, some may land right on you - your head, your arm, your leg, etc. Make sure you watch your step, you don't want to step on one! The enclosed area is quite humid so be prepared. If you are a fan of butterflies I would highly recommend the exhibit. It's a small price to pay for an experience so rich. Where else would you encounter so many types of butterflies
