I only ever go to the quality waters section of the San Juan so can only comment on that. Suffice it to say you're not gonna find much better fly fishing anywhere. Top notch. The rest rooms, picnic areas and parking lots are kind of run down but they do the trick. Don't forget to pay for parking! Also make sure you secure your vehicle and dont leave valuables in them if you're parked in a less visited parking lot. Last summer some friends of mind had their car broken into and gear stolen. Maybe just a fluke but worth mentioning. There is a great, well maintained campground on the river that gets super busy in the summertime. In my opinion the off season is the best time to visit if your gonna head to the San Juan. Summers get really crowded. I havnt spent much time on the lake so I can't really comment on that. I know lots of folks who love it for boating and picnic type activities. My five star rating is for the fishing. Otherwise I'd probably be at three stars.

The fishing is excellent. The lack of manpower for NM state parks, makes it hard for them to enforce the rules, and laws on the river. And the fisherman here Kama especially the locals don't know what etiquette is.

Dirty. Very dirty. Never caught any fish. The lake is pretty though.

Since I was camped about a mile north of the park on BLM property, Navajo Dam State Park was the nearest place to my semi long term campsite where I could refresh my water supply about once a week. Also, by paying the $5 day fee it allowed me the privilege of using their showers in the camping area. The facilities are clean and the water is treated, so I would definitely recommend this park. BTW, if you pay the $40 annual day fee for seniors and vets, then it works out to be a much more affordable and thrifty way of getting by while you actually camp on BLM.

We have a houseboat at the marina and love to go there to relax and enjoy the lake. The staff at the marina are wonderful. We'll worth the drive to visit this location!
