We are a family owned business that opened in September of 1999. We have a love and passion for dogs/cats and a desire to share our knowledge with pet owners. We have been breeding, training and competing with our Dalmatians for over 17 years.

Story

18 years ago, we opened PET Essentials with a dream, hope, love & a mission: “To provide quality and reasonably priced pet supplies to dog & cat owners with knowledgeable caring assistance resulting in an educated and satisfying buying decision. (directly from our mission statement 1999).
It is with a saddened heart that we have to announce, after 18 years of serving the Charlotte pet community that we are closing PET Essentials on September 30, 2017.

Thank you to all our loyal customers that have been with us from the very beginning (Stonecrest) and to all of our customers that we have gathered through the years; we have loved caring for you, your family & your pets. We have considered you all family!

1.0 star rating 2/18/2017 I've been taking my 17-1/2 year old Shepard mix here 4 or 5 times per year for almost 10 years. I've recommended them to everyone I talk to when the conversation becomes dog related and defended them when not very nice things were said about them, but no more. This afternoon we were KICKED OUT after getting her about 1/3 of the way dried and blown out because of "complaints about the hair". At a dog washing place. They've lost some great customers; neither I, my family members or friends will ever return.

Have you ever wondered how a business owner opened their business? Well, Karen & Paul Rowan have been breeding, training & showing champion show dogs; rescuing & rehabilitating unwanted dogs for over 20 years. The inspiration to open Pet Essentials, came in 1997 from one of our many journeys to the big box pet stores to buy pet food. We were always sharing our knowledge with new puppy owners who were lost in the aisles, unsure of what to buy. One evening, Paul came home two hours later than planned, from one of those trips to get dog food. Of course, he chose to help a young family that had just gotten a new puppy and were clueless on what they needed. That night, the concept of Pet Essentials was born. We opened Pet Essentials in September of 1999, originally in StoneCrest but moved to Carmel Village in 2006. Because of our intense passion, we chose to open our own independent pet supply store. Buying a franchise was never an option. Compare our prices, knowledgable service & quality products to the big box chains. Our prices are fair and competitive, the ‘personal service’ is what will keep you coming back. What’s the best part of owning your own business? Helping customers! Running the back end of a business is the tedious task. Unfortunately, over the past couple of years my face has been limited inside the store because of health problems. The hardest part of my recovery was moving my office to our home & the inability to work in the store. Even though, life is sprinkled with hardships & sacrifices; I am so incredibly blessed to have my husband, as my business partner. You will find Paul in the store 6 out of 7 days ordering products, managing employees and most of all dedicating our passion & love to our customers. All while taking care of me and our 9 dogs. Paul, I thank you for keeping our dream, love and passion alive while we have faced this difficult struggle. Your dedication, compassion & love have never fallen short. Thank you to my key staff, Sabrina, Janie & Paymon, for your faithful dedication and passion. Your loyalty and hard work have made my worries less. If you have been shopping with us over the past 18 years, we thank you for your ‘loyalty’. It is because of good customers like yourself, that we have built a competitive business in the Charlotte Community. If you have never been to our store, we invite you to come in and see what we are about. Compare our prices and our knowledgeable service with the big box chains. We are confident you will be pleasantly surprised at our reasonable prices and impressed with our passion, commitment & knowledgable service. Put your trust in our advice, after all we have over 20 years of hands on practical experience raising & training a pack. There isn’t another store in Charlotte that understands dog psychology & nutrition, as we do.

I have given this store my business for the past 2-3 years. I have heard about the owner's temper and attitude and today I experienced it first hand. When I questioned him about the pricing of a particular dog food he became very agitated and began lecturing me on how little he makes on a bag of dog food and how I just don't know anything about how the actual pet food suppliers are. I reminded him that he was the owner of the store and could make his own decisions and that just set him off more. He was extremely rude and patronizing. I have tried to support local business even though I can buy this brand of dog food online for less money, I have continued to support his business. Well today, he just lost a good customer and I will also be passing this on to my other friends who support his business. He cannot treat good customers this way and expect that we will come back.

The dog wash area makes it so easy and the staff is very helpful. They carry high quality dog food that you can't find at the big box stores.
