Richard B. Russell Jr. was a popular guy – not only did he serve as governor of Georgia from 1931-33, but he was a US Senator for almost 40 years. After his death he had all sorts of buildings, a road, a lake, a dam, an airport, a submarine, and yes, a state park named after him. That’s quite a legacy! This state park’s main attraction is its 18-hole championship golf course, but you can guess that wasn’t what my toddler and I were particularly interested in. We spent all of our time on a playground near the banks of the lake and had a picnic lunch on the shore. The park boasts that it has one of the oldest steel pin bridges in the area but when we went to see it, the trail leading to it was closed. Just as well I guess since my son was already pretty exhausted from climbing on the playground and running around on the beach.

We have camped here twice now in our RV. The first time was December 2015 and we camped there last week (11/30/17-12/3/17). We love this park! The sites are huge with beautiful water views. We kayaked every day. We have been RVing for a while now and this remains one of our favorites. It is kinda out there but if you are looking to enjoy some peace by the lake then look no further. Also, during this time of year it is not a very busy campground which is also nice. The camp hosts were the same people we met at our first visit. A VERY nice couple from Canada. They are so welcoming and helpful. The staff here is also friendly. We will be back for sure

Our family has met here for Thanksgiving for 3 years and we love it. Great campground, lots of biking and hiking trails, fishing, canoes and beautiful scenery. This year they started a Christmas program which we really enjoyed.

Cabins were well kept and very cozy. The park grounds were very nice and maintained. Very nice pavilions and lots of lakefront scenery. Not overcrowded as it’s off the beaten path so it’s very quiet and relaxing.

Love every time we go. This weekend, even in January, no one around, and very peaceful. Plus, its 1/2 off pricing....
