Love it, stay there every year. Its in an excellent location. Sure its not top shelf material as far as high quality this and that. But it has everything you need at a good price. The staff is awesome and helpful. You can NOT beat its value and location. Carlsbad is beautiful and this lovely place helps you to enjoy the surrounding beauty. I will keep coming back to the surf!

I stayed here with my family in July. We came in on the 4th of July at around 11pm, but had called ahead and it wasn't any problem checking in. The manager is always available, even in the middle of the night. The room was clean enough, and the pool is very closed off and private, which was nice. It is right across the street from the beach, so you didn't need to walk far with all of your beach things - which the hotel provided. They had a body board that you could borrow for a few hours, towels, beach toys and umbrellas. It was great for people travelling from out of town because you don't need to buy all these things then get rid of them when you leave. The motel is also close to down town, so you can walk everywhere. 
The breakfast in the morning was just enough to give you good start to your day, and you can eat it on the little patio upstairs that overlooks the ocean.

Overall, the Surf Motel made our trip to Carlsbad so much more relaxing than anywhere else could have, and I can't wait for us to come back next summer!

You can't find anything cheaper this close to the water(.)  restrooms, TV, and walls can use some updating but for the price it's a-ok. Room was CLEAN. Staff were helpful. Across the street from beach and ocean.  Pretty good deal for an independent motel. Rooms are pretty big too.  You will not find it on any travel apps either. Google it. Oh yah they also offer a free mini continental breakfast(bakery goods, fruit and juices). Also pretty quiet for the area.

Great hotel for the price and location. Literally a five minute walk to Carlsbad state beach. The restaurant next to it serves amazing breakfast and there are some awesome shops for souvenirs.

Its not a resort.  Just know that.  Its a small, cheap and friendly motel with a great location.  Its really close to the beach.  The times we have stayed the rooms were clean and everything worked fine.  The front desk was friendly and accommodating.  Will be staying there again.
