The Berghoff Restaurant

About

A Chicago classic for over a century, The Berghoff serves German old world favorites alongside contemporary (and allergen friendly) dishes.

Story

Located in Chicago's Loop for more than 118 years, The Berghoff Restaurant includes a full service Restaurant & Bar, a Lower Level Berghoff Café and the Berghoff Café at O'Hare International Airport. The Berghoff is known for family traditions, its annual Oktoberfest celebration and being a part of the fabric of Chicago.

The Berghof Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, home of Chicago's No. 1 Liquor License and one of the oldest, family-run establishments in the nation. Our menu includes classics (like Wiener Schnitzel and Sauerbraten) as well as newer, lighter and allergen friendly dishes (such as Stuffed Sole and Cedar Plank Salmon). Be sure to try the famous Berghoff Root Beer and Berghoff Beer.

The Berghoff Café offers lunch M-F from 11 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., and is conveniently located in the lower level of the historic Berghoff building at 17 W. Adams Street.

Enjoy a truly unique custom event experience in one of The Berghoff's four private event spaces. Whether you're planning an executive outing, awards dinner, gala, alumni reception, holiday party, or wedding, we are there ever step of the way to ensure its success.

This is one of the oldest establishments in the downtown area, doing business for over 120 years. The food and atmosphere are fantastic. We sat for dinner in the main room, wait staff were observant and attended to every question and request. I had a Berghoff wheat bear which was excellent. Their brewery is in Indiana but the product is based on the original which was based in the area. They have three craft beers from their brewery plus a fairly large selection of other craft beers available. Not huge number but enough for most all of craft beer drinkers except maybe expert tasters. I had the roast duck with asparagus and substituted potato pancakes for the rice pilaf. The plate was outstanding. Duck was cooked to perfection, crispy skin with juicy and moist meat inside. Potato pancakes were well done, crispy outside, very tasty even without any sauce. Asparagus was roasted to perfection and seasoned expertly. My wife had sauerbraten with mashed potatoes and a small side of veggies. She cleaned her plate of all except the veggies. Meat was moist with excellent gravy, mashed were moist and had just the right amount of tiny lumps for flavor. Since both of us left nothing behind I would say happy taste buds and full stomachs. Including beer and tip we were still under $70 which is a very good deal in my opinion. We went to the bar which connects right to the dining room after for another drink while listening to the blues combo play a set. With tip, $17 for a glass of house Merlot and another Berghoff wheat. Again not bad for downtown. Very crowded but still comfy once we found stools. All in all this was a great experience and we plan on going back again after not being there for many years. Would highly recommend it.

Went for food here twice during a weekend visit. First time just alone at the bar for a quick bite and a beer. The brat I ordered came out very fast and the beer selection is above par. I recommend the Berghoff dark, quite tasty. The second time was for dinner with my girlfriend, and we got a few cocktails and split a jagerschnitzel. It was a very big portion and was also quite good. Overall this place has friendly service, good food, and a classic Chicago feel to it. Love the ambiance and decor. Highly recommend visiting.

I only rate it 4 stars because I remember how it was before. Better chairs, a bit darker lighting (better mood) and more variety in the menu. Everything is still excellent. I'm a bit sad to see a bunch of non-German food had encroached in place of a wider variety of traditional Bavarian fare. How about removing that junk and adding good from OTHER regions of Germany?

Awesome beer selection. I love the bar and the history of the place. Food is always great. Gotta get the pretzel. Love stopping in after work

Best waitress ever. Wasn't in our face, but always available. Game sausage with spätzle was delicious, beer selection was top notch. Loved the casual seating, struck up a nice conversation with the table next to us. Perfect for tourists looking for good beer and hearty German fare in the Loop.
