About

Once library of financier Pierpont Morgan—now a museum, research library, music venue, architectural landmark, and historic site.

Story

A complex of buildings in the heart of New York City, the Morgan Library & Museum began as the private library of financier Pierpont Morgan, one of the preeminent collectors and cultural benefactors in the United States.

Today it is a museum, independent research library, music venue, architectural landmark, and historic site.

A century after its founding, the Morgan maintains a unique position in the cultural life of New York City and is considered one of its greatest treasures.

Beautiful, airy museum in a great location. Staff were friendly. It's quite a small museum, and the library and study are only open at certain times on certain days (4-6 pm on Sundays, for example) and those are the highlights. You can visit just those for free, or pay (13$ seniors and students, 20$ adults) for the full experience. There's currently a great exhibition on Thoreau, but aside from the study, library, and that one exhibit, the rest was a bit boring to me--I think it's geared more toward elderly people, because that was the majority of the population at the museum. The library itself is utterly magnificent. Loved it. In hindsight would visit just the library and study on a free day.

This small museum is a collector dream of New York banker Mr. Morgan. He retired from banking and collected all items of interest. The quietness of this museum and the quality made my top choice for New York. If you are an art buff you will see Byzantine work, 1400bc sculptures, Renaissance oil paintings, Flemish oil paintings, first addition rare books, original music scores, hidden staircases and much more. This place is a delight for they eyes. It was amaizing to view each item this man collected because he had very discerning taste. A must see off the beaten path and a delight.

I would recommend, but honestly we left feeling a bit like there's no there there. Perhaps it's all about the special exhibitions and ours was meh. It was worth the trip to see the private libraries.

The cafe was delightful and their fare enchanting. When you enter their galleries, you will become immersed in the rich culture that defines the Morgan. A very interesting place to learn more about Pierpont Morgan's legacy and contributions to the arts.

A small but high quality museum from a tourist point of view. The original library is tucked away in the corner but it well worth seeing. The Emily Dickinson exhibit was there when we went, which is what my wife wanted to see, and it was worthwhile in its own right.
