Every time we go to the U.S. Botanic Garden we discover something new. And our kids learn so much: About plants, ecosystems, where their food comes from. This is not just some random assemblage of plants - this is a real garden, put together with thought and purpose. We especially love the concert series around the winter holidays. A variety of music genres and performers, yet each one sounds so great in that space. So while throngs of tourists line up to see the train exhibit (again, just around the winter holidays), we take a different door, enjoy the music, and see the amazing Washington landmarks recreated out of natural materials in such exquisite detail. And when the weather warms up, the outdoor spaces open up for even more exploring. For a place right next door to the Capitol, it's amazing what beauty and peace you can find.

I visited the botanic garden for the first time this December. I didn’t know what to expect during the winter, but i has a great time! They had holiday plants and decorations up, a train room and lots of tropical plants as well. In the main entrance they had iconic DC monuments and buildings made out of twigs, acorns, etc. (see pictures) My favorite was the orchid room. I went on a weekday and it was the perfect time to go - no crowds at all. Highly recommend!!

I really liked it as it was easily accessible and free. The plants and trees were nicely organized in themed rooms. The gardens are not very big, nor do they seem really 'natural'. The free audio tour that you can follow with your phone is nice and easy, a good addition. The exhibition - about roots - was very interesting as well. As it is free, I totally recommend entering it if you're there anyway, but I would not find it worth the trip if you have to travel into D.C. for it.

The Christmas display was beautiful and very well done. I think the trains were cute but....didn't contribute to the story. The rest of the plants were pretty. The staff kept the lines moving which was great right before Christmas. It wss crazy that the men's bathroom was out of order and had no signs of being fixed. They were telling folks to go to another building to use the facilities.

Top spot to go during winter! It feels like summer in the "rainforest" section (think that's the name of the main area that is multiple levels tall. Come in here to warm up and see beautiful plant arrangements. Many different ecosystems and areas represented, including an orchid area, Mediterranean, desert, and many others. Very peaceful spot too. Highly recommend!
