Año Nuevo State Park

About

Come find elephant seals, sandy trails, ocean views, historic barns and more at Año Nuevo State Park.

Story

Año Nuevo State Park’s rich variety of natural and cultural resources draws visitors from around the world. The park’s Natural Preserve offers an extraordinary wilderness experience, where every year up to 10,000 elephant seals return to breed, give birth, and molt their skin amongst the scenic dunes and beaches.

The park features the Marine Education Center boasting a natural history exhibit, bookstore, and theater. This complex is housed in the historic nineteenth century dairy ranch of the Dickerman/Steele family. These restored buildings recall the early American settlers, while the midden sites throughout the Natural Preserve tell us the story of the Quiroste Indians that lived peacefully here for thousands of years prior to the 1600s. Cove Beach is a short walk from here for beachgoers and surfers.

The physical terrain of Año Nuevo is distinctive, with coastal terrace prairie, wetland marshes, dune fields and coastal scrub hosting a high diversity of plants and animals, including the rare and endangered San Francisco Garter Snake and California Red-legged Frog.

A hike out along ocean bluffs brings visitors to Año Nuevo Point, a major bird migratory route and fantastic birding location. Located just offshore sits Año Nuevo Island and the remains of a 19th century lighthouse and fog signal station. Built in 1872, the historic keeper’s house now provides a new home to Brandt’s and Pelagic Cormorants as well as California Sea Lions. Otters and harbor seals are often sighted in the waters and magnificent Steller Sea Lions take up residence on the outlaying rocks.

Most amazing state Park I have visited. We had a fantastic time watching elephant seals! The Rangers and Docent Allen made our visit incredibly fun and informative. Our children loved this and we have spent many dinners reflecting on this adventure together. Thank you for such an awesome day! Oh and we just dropped in without online reservations. No problem!

Glorious reality. I stopped and walked nearly a mile to the edge of the beach where the fog and the sun were at play on the waves. Absolutely stunning day in such an inspiration. Be sure to take side roads inland to enjoy the Moss colored trees in the forest as well.

Great place to hike and see the elephant seals, sort of up close. Great sunsets too (take a flash light or a head lamp to hike back after sunset). The preserve is well protected and requires a permit. Permits are free until end of November, but they are not given beyond 3:30pm. So, be there 3:30pm latest to hike to seal observation points. December to March, only guided tours by park ranges are permitted, and they do get filled fast. So, plan accordingly. Go to the park website for more information. Take a good camera with a telephoto lens (at least 400mm) if interested in wildlife pictures, seals or other wildlife. On my last hike, there were hundreds of Brown Pelicans almost all along the hike. Just beautiful.

Elephant seals are usually here for one reason or another throughout the year, but coming in the winter (December through maybe February or March) brings a great opportunity to see the bulls, the mommas, and the young. Best of all, in my opinion, is that you are escorted, during these months, by a volunteer docent who has all sorts of wonderful knowledge on these critters. Enjoy! Bonus: There are picnic benches at the trailhead before you head out for those who thought to bring a lunch or snack.

The place is beautiful. There is a short hike to the beach and to see the elephant seals, which we didn't see, because got there late for the last guided tour. Beware and don't leave valuable things visible in the car. Our rental car was broken into and our backpacks were stolen in the parking lot. Another car parked a few feet away was broken into too. We called 911 and the police arrived within minutes, they were very helpful and kind. Otherwise, we enjoyed the views!
