Natural Bridges State Beach

Story

Natural Bridges State Beach is a 65acre California state park in Santa Cruz, California in the United States. The park features a natural bridge across a section of the beach. It is also well known as a hotspot to see monarch butterfly migrations. The Monarch Butterfly Natural Preserve is home to up to 150,000 monarch butterflies from October through early February.HistoryThe first inhabitants in the Santa Cruz area were small groups of Native Americans. The Ohlone were a semi-nomadic tribe that hunted game and marine mammals and supplemented their diets with shellfish, fish, edible roots and shoots, acorns, nuts, and seeds. The Ohlone raised medicinal plants and herbs. They made tools from locally found stones and shells. Their crafts included shellfish jewelry and baskets. The displacement of the natives began with the Spanish colonization of the Americas when missionaries and soldiers brought the Ohlone into the missions. The population of Native Americans was greatly reduced by European diseases to which they had no resistance. Governance of the area was transferred from Spain to Mexico after the Mexican War of Independence. The citizens of Mexico used what is now Natural Bridges State Beach as pasture land for their cattle. California became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War.

I discovered this beach years ago while in the area on business. During the winter months you can witness glorious and vivid sunsets, clouds and weather permitting. Be sure to have your camera, a tripod and a warm coat. It gets a little cool and breezy there. There is a beach below I've never been on but it always has people on it. There's a couple parking lots there and street parking.

There is so much to see! The beach is clean and you can see an abundant amount of wildlife. If you walk across the beach to the bluffs you can see the tide pools at low tide. The tide pools are incredible. Also, if you make it there during the butterfly migration season you will be treated to viewing thousands of monarch butterflies. The trail for butterfly viewing is next to the visitor center. I was told by a ranger that the best time to see the butterflies is around November 1st where there can be up to 10,000 butterflies.

This is a really great park. It has some good wheelchair and stroller friendly areas. The natural preserve is very pretty and has some nice interpretative kiosks. The Visitor's Center has a cute shop and some fun info on the local flora & fauna. Their specialty is the monarch butterfly migration. The beach is really nice with very soft sands and the waves weren't too strong. If you catch the rides right, the tidal pools aren't too challenging to get out to. The only real downside is that parking is limited, so it can get tight later in the afternoon.

One of the best places near Santa Cruz beach for a beautiful sunset have been there numerous times and I never felt bored. I visit this place at least twice a month and the Park is open from 8 a.m. until sunset, usually after Sunset the cops come and drive you away so you got to be careful. Usually parking space it's not a problem. Sometimes it gets cold in the evening due to the Pacific Waters...

Great beach, tide pools, and views with lots of places to have picnics and play in the sand and stuff. The arch isn't really accessible except at low tide but is visible all the time. The tide pools are cool to check out too and are easily reached. There is also ample parking on nearby streets
