Story

The Hispanic Society of America is a museum and reference library for the study of the arts and cultures of Spain and Portugal and their former colonies in Latin America, the Philippines and Portuguese India. (Despite the name and the founder's intention, it has never functioned as a learned association.) Founded in 1904 by Archer M. Huntington, the institution remains at its original location in a 1908 Beaux Arts building on Audubon Terrace (at 155th Street and Broadway) in the lower Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City in the United States. A second building, on the north side of the terrace, was added in 1930. Exterior sculpture in front of that building includes work by Anna Hyatt Huntington and nine major reliefs by the Swiss-American sculptor Berthold Nebel, a commission that took ten years to complete. The Hispanic Society complex was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012.CollectionsThe museum contains more than 18,000 works in every medium, ranging from prehistoric times to the 20th century. There are important paintings by Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, El Greco, and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, among others, as well as sculpture and architectural elements, furniture and metalwork, ceramics and textiles.

Came for the amazing collection of Joaquin Sorrolla large scale canvases. It's like a holy experience to sit in front of these masterpieces. Stayed for the antiquities and the history and the great interpretive information. Don't miss Anna Hyatt Huntington's magnificent sculptures outside in the courtyard of this beautiful historic building. My favorite museum in NYC.

Contrary to the museum's website or posted hours, this building is closed for the next two years. So keep that in mind before you run around the building in the pouring rain for 15 minutes trying to get in. Because you can't, and they literally can't be bothered to put up a sign saying that they are closed for two years. BONUS: When I called to ask how to get in, the woman working there told me that while they didn't post a sign in front of the building saying they were closed, I should have known about it because it was "on the news."

Huge canvases of mostly religious paintings. There is a small section showing Spanish ceramics and earthenware. The museum is too dark to see signages very cleary but it was bad customer service that really ruined it for me. The female receptionist showed a lot of attitude from the get-go, gave incomplete information, and was too lazy to even man the baggage deposit room. She was on her smartphone the whole time I was there.

We took our children here this morning to participate in a group kids session and had a great time. It was set up like an informal art class, right there in the museum itself. It reminded me of my art classes in my university days, except it was geared at young kids 10 and younger. The program directors, Cristina and Marta, were really fantastic. I would recommend taking your kids here for one of these sessions if you can. The sesions are conducted in Spanish and are a great tool for the kids (and parents) to meet other families and gain education in Spanish.
