Story

The Blue Ridge Mountains seem to roll on forever from the vantage point of this wonderfully rural yet convenient campground, nested atop a high hill above the Shenandoah Valley. Cruise along the famed Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, just a few miles away, or explore the park's countless hiking trails. Nearby outfitters rent canoes and tubes for floating the Shenandoah River. This new KOA is close to the magical subterranean world of Luray Caverns and offers easy access to several Civil War sites, including New Market Battlefield State Historical Park and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. At the campground, the spacious, well-tended grounds include shady sites, a swimming pool and a ball field perfect for family games. The on-site restaurant serves up breakfast on weekends and homemade pizza fresh from its wood-fired brick oven. Groups love the big yurt, complete with DVD projector and large screen.

This is a great little campground. It is not over run with people having wild parties. The camp sites were very nice and bathhouses kept clean. Close to Shenandoah National Park and Luray Caverns.

Not worth it! 1. From our initial problem of not receiving the correct keys (we stayed at the Yurt, overpriced and heaters not working). You are next to the communal camping area and the staff allowed people to set up on top of our fire ring. When asked, they acknowledged that they knew about it and did not want to correct the concern. Staff generally helpful, but manager was not attentive and even rude at times. 2. YOU ARE NEXT TO A FARM !! SMELLY , Roosters making noise at 5:30 am! 3. Showers are far away. You have to either walk almost half a mile on road or scale an enormous hill (not good at night). Horrible experience.

Families Beware! We made a weekend reservation for our family based on amenities described on the website, , including 2 pools. We tried to take our kids swimming on a Saturday morning and were greeted by a sign by the large pool that said ''adults only' on Saturday'. The only other option was a small shaded pool full of bugs. I was told it was an arbitrary policy of the owner to restrict the large pool to adults whenever he feels like it. When I told the owner that it was discriminatory and false advertising, he sarcastically said "why do they need to go in that pool, are they swimming laps?" Then, "go ahead and complain, I hope we attract more adults here anyway" and then started spouting other 'rules' that weren't even posted. I couldn't believe it! If the owner wants to discriminate against children, he should open an adults only campground outside the KOA network. We cancelled our reservation and left. We have been loyal KOA campers over the years and this is the first and I hope last experience of this kind.

We liked this place and would definitely recommend it. Friendly staff. Clean bathhouse. We are an older couple, so we don't usually use amenities such as pools or game rooms. We had a nice site. The park is convenient to local attractions. We would stay here again if in the area.

Luray KOA is a wonderful campground if you're looking for serene views with beautiful green foliage. You are surrounded by beautiful mountains on each side! The campground overall is very clean (I was seriously impressed with how clean their camp bathrooms and showers were!) and well ran. For the most part the staff is very friendly. However, the flies are absolutely TERRIBLE!!! This campground sits smack in the middle of a farm with many cows that graze on the other side of the fence, which separates the lots from the field. They are great entertainment if you have young children, but become pests in the sense of what they bring with them; especially when they use manure to spray their fields...Anyway! We began our stay on lots 27 & 28, and after just 2 days of our 7 day stay, requested new lots as we were inundated with flies. We couldn't even walk out of our campers without being swarmed! And forget the idea of having a nighttime campfire! S'mores are entirely out of the question with those suckers around! That was absolutely impossible in our first locations... When requesting our new lots, we were quickly given the opportunity to move; however, the lady we had to deal with in order to do so (her name was Katherine), was very rude. You could tell that she wasn't thrilled about have to switch our sites and information around. Her body language told all! She basically told us we were lying about the flies, and that she had never heard any complaints about flies over the many years she has worked there...that is until us! However, what she didn't know was that she was going to be getting multiple complaints from additional campers having the SAME EXACT ISSUE right near us! She even called one of the workers a lier after we told her he had given us insight into WHY the flies were probably so terrible. Anyway, had she been a little more friendly, I might be writing an entirely different, and absolutely positive review about the Luray KOA. BUT, her rudeness made our experience with the staff a little sour. I'm not entirely sure I would recommend this campground simply because of the severity of the flies. I can deal with other flying bugs, bees, ants, etc...But when we can't even enjoy our stay because of the pesky flies it becomes a non-relaxing stay! If you're okay with having to swat away pesky flies 24/7, during your entire stay, and not even get the opportunity to sit outside then you may very well be fine. BUT, if you don't like being swarmed every time you walk outside then I certainly would not recommend you try this campground out!
