I was surprised by the general mediocre care at the Penrose ED. My son fractured his finger while staying at the Broadmoor Hotel. The ED waiting room was cramped and filled with coughing people. You first check-in, wait, go to a room for vitals, back to waiting room, wait, go to registration/financial desk, back to waiting room, wait, go to x-ray, back to waiting room, wait, then to fast-track, wait, seen by a PA of questionable skill, wait, PA rummages around for supplies, wait, get a digital nerve block, wait 45 minutes, ED physician stops by for three minutes, wait, finger fracture is reduced by PA, splint applied, wait for x-ray CD, wait, get CD, wait, finally I get up and walk around the ED trying to find someone who knows how we can be discharged. Nurse says she didn't know I was ready. Sign paperwork and leave. Fast track bay is small with five or six patient stations, crowded, separated by curtains. You can easily hear all of the conversations and watch some procedures around you. Overall, chaotic, poorly coordinated care. Felt like inner city hospital experience.

For a busy ER, this place does a great job. I have been here twice and both times, it is clear that they get the most urgent cases back first, which made me definitely more okay with waiting. The nurses are kind, gentle, and helpful, and the doctors there that I have seen are thorough, knowledgeable, and actually got down to the root of my problems, rather than just treating the symptoms and sending me home (which other ERs have done). If you can make it up here for an emergency, I would recommend going to this ER.

If I could give Zero stars, I would. I took my husband here for possible complications from surgery and while we sat in the waiting room for two hours we watched as they took people back for the flu. They said they were just taking them back for blood work yet they never took my husband back for blood work for a possible staff infection. While sitting and waiting we met a man who was there because he had a serious gash in his hand from a work-related injury who had already been there two hours. They had wrapped up his injured hand but it was still bleeding and in obvious need of stitches. He too, was being passed up for people with the flu. A kid with a head concussion? Passed up for flu victims. The triage nurses need to learn how to prioritize.

I had the best hospital visit I have ever had last night. The entire staff that cared for me was very efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. I was in and out of there in no time, was diagnosed correctly and they all had a great bed side manor. Dr. Ryan Christensen, Laura W. the RN and Bryan F the Tech should all be commended on their care giving skills. It is employees like these that make patients like me not mind going to the ER. I give them all 10 stars. Keep up the great work you all. Joyce Krivda

I was treated quickly and with incredible empathy unlike any I have been treated with by a doctor before. It was my first time in the ER, and they were very patient with me, even though it was an extremely busy day for them. The team was very good at explaining what they were doing and why they were doing it. The only reason it is not 5 stars is because the instructions they gave me for taking the medication afterwords were not very detailed/clear, and I didn’t know the interval at which I was allowed to take them and thatI had to take them with food (it wasn’t on the bottle either), and I became very ill after that. Other than that, the team was excellent, empathetic, and efficient. Thank you guys!
