Story

Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Care Center (TBVSECC) was established in 1982 as the first multi-specialty veterinary hospital on the west coast of Florida. Today, TBVSECC has grown to include advanced and specialized veterinary services in Dentistry, Dermatology, Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, Physical Rehabilitation & Fitness, and Surgery. With a dedicated veterinary healthcare staff of 125+, Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Care Center provides 24-hour compassionate care seven days a week to over 13,000 patients annually.

Our Emergency Care Center (ECC) provides emergency medical and surgical care of cats and dogs. ECC is fully staffed with veterinarians and technicians 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and all holidays. To allow our staff to make swift, accurate diagnosis, our facility has a fully equipped veterinary laboratory for blood analysis, in-house digital radiology, ultrasound and cardiac ECG as well as more routine diagnostics capabilities.

Our hospital and specialists are prepared to treat the most serious injuries and illness with an extensively equipped intensive care ward and surgical suites.

The Dental department offers consultations in dental and oral related diseases. The department is limited to advanced therapy in periodontics, endodontics (root canal), orthodontics, prosthodontics, restoratives (crowns) and oral surgery.

The Dermatology department provides diagnosis and treatment of skin and ear related disorders of companion animals, including allergic, autoimmune, endocrine, infectious and psychogenic conditions.

The Internal Medicine Department provides advanced diagnostics and treatment for a wide variety of internal medical problems including heart, lung, gastrointestinal, liver/gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidney, urinary bladder, endocrine disorders, and cancer.

The Ophthalmology department offers consultation and treatment in eye-related diseases in all species of animals, as well as the screening of purebred dogs for the presence of inherited eye disorders (CERF examinations).

The Physical Rehabilitation & Fitness department maximizes patient overall post-operative recovery. In a controlled and supervised manner, our goal is to improve comfort, speed recovery, and optimize overall patient mobility and function.

The Surgery department provides the following treatment and therapies.
Soft Tissue: Chest and Abdominal surgery, Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), Portosystemic shunt, Reconstructive surgery.
Orthopedic: Fracture repair & Ilizaroc Ring Fixation, Total Hip Replacement (THR) & Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (TPO), Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO), Arthroscopy.
Neurosurgery: Myelograms, Spinal Surgery, Hemilaminectomy, Ventral Slot.

I ended up going here for an emergency that my dog was having. We walked right in and seen a Dr. In roughly 15/20 minutes. The vet tech was super nice, and very caring towards my dog. The vet can in shortly after and we where met with the same kind of caring demeanor. She was very kind and had us taken care of in a reasonable time. When getting the bill from an ER vet I expected the worst, but was rather surprised that the cost was so low. They even recommended getting my dog's scripts from Walmart for a cheaper price. I will be taking any animal with an emergency to these people from now on. Thank you Dr. Mayne!

Unprofessional and dishonest staff, dirty exam rooms, and a whole lot of rude reside here. 

My partner and I decided we would care for our pup at home instead of leaving him there at the animal hospital  for the rest of the evening ( we were there around 10pm ). We paid $310 on the exam and X-rays. They advised we leave him there until the morning as they would hydrate him and for observation. We didn’t feel it was necessary as most of the pups symptoms had ceased. I didn’t think paying $800-$1100 for hydration was worth it after his X-rays came back okay. 

The staff was all smiles until we told them what our decision was. Then the “dr” never returned to our exam room and the assistant had us sign an AMA form. No problem. 

When I got home I read our discharge paperwork and on it they lied about their recommendations and were unprofessionally critical of our decision to take our pet home. 

The last thing you need is someone being rude at a time when you’re already stressed about your pet being ill. 

Just be aware. We were as polite and were even joking with staff prior to the AMA... Two faced staff.

This specialty care vet facility is absolutely STELLAR!  I read some of the negative comments that people have posted on Google and I truly believe they have mistaken this facility for another.  I have been to this clinic several times since Sept with a sick dog- as an emergency and as a scheduled visit ....I have seen 4 different vets- and they have all been outstanding.  The names I specifically remember are Dr. Oswald and Dr. Cowan.  The staff here is AMAZING;  kind, considerate and on top of their profession.   This facility is state of the art - and impeccably clean.   People should understand they are open 24/7 - 365 days a year,  and they staff top notch veterinarians, nurses and clinical technicians.    They are available when most other vets are NOT and they provide emergency care for our precious family members.  Those of you who expect them to perform their services for free - or provide services on a "promissory note" ------WHY?   To the complainers who have experienced a wait - (I personally have not experienced that here in 5 or 6 visits) I would hope that if your pet was more critical or needed lifesaving care , you would be forever grateful that they saw it first!  I am happy to wait if my animal is in no immediate distress.  I would want a another pet's life saved first.  If you are one that reads reviews before considering facilities- please keep in mind this facility provides critical care by internal med specialists and they deal with very sick animals every day.  Unfortunately, the outcomes aren't always positive..... but you will find no better veterinary care anywhere.

Waited for our  appointment in a room for an hour and a half. I finally went to the front desk and was told that the Dr. had an emergency. I said I understand that she should take the emergency first, but what I don't understand is why no one came into the room to inform us that she may or may not be able to see our dog, The front desk said the Dr. would call us. It's now four hours later and no call. Definitely not a professional business.

Dr. Oaks performed cancer surgery on our mini schnauzer. He was so kind.  She is doing well and we are very thankful for his skill and caring. He called 3 times after surgery. Twice to check on her and once to tell us the lab results. Expensive, but not as expensive as we thought. I do believe that they have plans to help with payment. In an emergency, this is where we will go!
