Story

The history of the Russian foreign mission in San Francisco dates back to the 19th century. The Imperial Consulate General of Russia housed at the historic James C. Flood Building at 870 Market Street, was closed in 1923. The first Soviet Consulate was opened in 1933 after diplomatic relations between the USSR and the USA were established ,and it operated in the city until the end of the World War II.
On June 1, 1964, the USSR and the United States signed the Consular Convention which regulated the opening of consular offices in both countries and became the founding base for the bilateral agreement for the establishment of the respective offices in San Francisco and Leningrad (St. Petersburg). The Consulate General of the Soviet Union - and, since 1992 - the Consulate General of the Russian Federation - became operational de facto in 1971 upon arrival of the Soviet Consul General. The Consulate was officially inaugurated at its present location at 2790 Green Street two years later.

Looks like they have different (more professional) people working here now. In the past there were delays with answering emails and phone calls, sometimes those answers were just rude. And now I am pleased to say I am very happy with the service. I wish, some info on their website were less confusing, but at least now I know: if I don't understand something, I can just email them and always receive a polite and clear reply.

What a great service!!!! I was so not expecting it because of the previous reviews. Staff was very polite and helpful. My emails were addressed in timely manner and all my questions answered. You just have to prepare all your document according to the instructions on the website (which are self explanatory) and apply for your documents allowing enough time to be processed.

You get the experience similar to what you will get while in Russia. It was polite, but strict at same time, which is what I expected. I didn't had any issues there, however I was always coming there physically and never bothered to call or send emails (because most likely it will take a while.. a long while). There is a room for improvement, of course. The room is small and restroom door is right there, which is not very esthetical. Air ventilation should be better as well. But before coming, please do your homework and check which documents are needed, etc., otherwise you might need to have a drive back home dissapointed. Update 02/24/2017: I drove to San Francisco just to see that it's closed today (holiday) and NO mention about this on website! That's bad and waste of time :(((

Early days you could prepare all required documents, come, get into line, wait from 25 minutes if you get in right time to 2.5 hours and just wait until your passport ready. Total about 3 months + couple hours for preparing documents at home and waiting in line. For the other documents it takes faster. A document for returning to motherland (works for 2 weeks and maybe useful when your passport expired) - in one day after you stay in line. Today for getting a new passport you have to be ready to get appointment in electronic line in half year in advance + 3 months for the waiting. However, if you have a good excuse to get appointment early, you can send e-mail with explanation and they find you time for the early appointment. Talk to the guys polite during the appointment (they are polite themselves, so, it is easy), and you can get additional help. For example, I was able to order my passport together with my daughter passport order, while I did not have any excuses for the early appointment. Just prepared all the documents and came with her. So, if the electronic line worked better, I would put 5 stars.
