Madison B-Cycle is beautifully implemented and provides seamless access to and from all areas on campus and in the downtown area. My membership: I have had a student annual membership for 2 years in a row. Usage: I use it at least once a day to bike into work, for errands, and to visit friends from the west side to the east side. The cost of membership is low and even a single day membership is cost effective (I've had to use it a few times between renewing my membership). They work wonderfully and despite the limited gear ratios, they're extremely versatile. The basket can hold quite a bit and the lights allow me to travel at night without worrying about getting hit by a car. I think two interactions with the B-Cycle most adequately explains how great this service is: 1) I had checked out a B-Cycle and had dropped it off at a station. I hadn't quite pushed it hard enough into the stall for it to lock-in and be registered by the station. At the 1 hr. mark, (where it's the $5 initial 24-hr fee + $2 for 30-60 min + $2 for every 30 min after 1 hr), I received an e-mail from their customer service telling me I hadn't checked in and asking me if something went wrong, since their records had shown that I'd never checked it out longer than 30 minutes! I responded that yes, I did drop it off. Within another hour they sent an e-mail back saying they had sent a technician and the bike was indeed there, just not locked-in. Just amazing service who cares about the customer, not only money. 2) A station was down (which is very rare), and I didn't know it and pulled my bike into one of the stations. I didn't hear the confirmation beep, so I checked the station screen and realized it was down. I called in to the customer service to let them know at 8:00 pm. She made a note of it. Later I got an e-mail saying my bike was still checked out and I was accruing costs. At normal work hours the next morning, they sent another e-mail saying not to worry about being charged and that they were fixing that station. In the meantime, they gave me a promo code for a free 24-hr bike pass while they fixed the station. I can't say enough good things about B-Cycle. If you don't have a bike and need to ride one while living here, this is perfect. If you're visiting and want to explore the city, this is perfect. If your bike is broken down/in the shop for a few days, this is perfect. I can't wait until they become more prominent and more stations pop up even further from campus/downtown to increase my errand-running opportunities.
