How is this place always so good!? Every local, fresh fish they get their hands on becomes a banquet of deliciousness. My wife and I went the other day. We hadn’t been in a while and we decided to go while we both had a day off. She got grouper and I got clams on a roll. The slaw, the spices, the breading were all incredible. Of course, we got hush honeys as well and they were out of this world. On a cold day, this is just what a person needs to feel a little warmth and comfort. We’re both excited for the second location to open. Hopefully that will be soon.

Best seafood I’ve had in NC, maybe anywhere. And in the middle of winter. I’ve only heard good things about this place, so my expectations were high. My food exceeded my expectations. So fresh and flavorful. They put a lot of craftsmanship into all the flavors. I’m not a big hush puppy fan, but I’ll be back for their honey hush puppies with pops of spice. The crab grits had at least 2 inches of fresh crab on top. Please go check this place out!

In the past 2 weeks I’ve had the privilege of eating seafood in great restaurants in the outer banks, New Bern, Kingston (Chef & the Farmer) and the iconic Saltbox Seafood Joint here in Durham. This amazing shack won hands down. I found myself passing by on a recent cold day before lunch hour hit, so I stopped while I had the chance. Even then the place was backed up with orders. Lacking knowledge in the range of fresh fish types, I went for the black drum. A plate or a roll were the choices, so roll it was. About 20 minutes later, my roll sat before me overloaded with three healthy-sized lightly fried strips plus fillings and lemon wedges. Too weighty to eat like a sandwich, the fork won, and in seconds my soul was singing hallelujah to the most savory chunks of flaky, juicy, delicate flavors imaginable. Even if you think you don’t like fish, do not miss the Saltbox! Just read another review claiming $14 was overpriced for a grouper roll here and I almost fell out of my chair. Apparently this diner doesn’t know grouper or understand the value of getting it fresh. How about buying 2lbs of it on Amazon? Starting price is $99. Or go down to the Keys and meet the boat at the dock for $20/lb

I came into this with high expectations!!! I'd say excellent fish, great potatoes, the best cocktail sauce I've ever had. Cole slaw was so-so in my opinion. Glad it was absent of mayo but had trouble with the very tart vinegary taste. Food is expensive. Basic lunch was $24. Person taking my order did not show any enthusiasm. Bathrooms were smelly.

We had high expectations for this place based on the other reviews I had read online but were ultimately disappointed. We ordered the grouper plate, grouper roll, and chopped scallops plate. We had no wait in the line which was nice but it took over 20 minutes to get our food at a deserted restaurant stand. 19 dollars for the grouper plate and it came with 5 small tenders of fish and some potatoes. The grouper was just okay and extremely overpriced for the amount of food received. Scallops were fine and the grouper roll again was overpriced (4 small pieces of fish on a roll for 14 dollars). The tartar sauce and seasoned potatoes were definitely homemade and were the highlights of the meal. There are some good qualities about this place but they seriously need to work on their pricing. Mediocre seafood will never be worth this price.
