About

Proudly preserving the tradition of whole-hog, pit-cooked barbecue with a heaping helping of Southern hospitality.

Story

The Pit proudly serves authentic whole-hog, pit-cooked barbecue in downtown downtown Durham's DIY District. A celebration of all of the great culinary offerings of the Old North State, The Pit has made a name for itself as the destination for the state's signature cuisine. The pigs used to produce the barbecue are all raised in North Carolina using AWA certified farming practices, and the freshest of the state's bountiful produce is featured in the starters, sides and desserts.

Going far beyond traditional barbecue offerings with some contemporary twists on Southern favorites, The Pit also serves Texas-style brisket, baby back ribs, smoked turkey, triple-battered fried chicken, and a can’t-miss barbecue tofu dish. The tradition of Southern hospitality mixes well with The Pit’s contemporary setting in a beautifully restored 1950's 7-Up bottling Plant.

All of the spirits at The Pit have been handpicked to enhance the smoked and sometimes spicy fare cooked over the pit, as well as with some of the more traditional entrees. We take this to new heights with dinners that pair specific wines and beers with barbecue. And if it’s bourbon you want, we’ve got a selection of fine bourbon whiskey meant to awaken even more smoky flavors from the pit.

I ate there recently and was impressed. It has been a few years since I had been there. Previously, I thought it was only so-so. This time the Lexington style BBQ was great. The sides were good, especially the mac and cheese. Finally the desserts were great. The banana pudding had a baked meringue top. While all banana pudding is good, a baked meringue is my favorite.

Went here for a rehearsal dinner so I don't know that my review is exactly the same as most of the others, but our experience here was awesome. We got here an hour and a half early, and despite the fact that there were 20 of us crowding the bar, none of the staff indicated that it was a problem or that we were taking up space. The service was friendly, drinks were DELICIOUS, and the food, oh my god the food! We devoured our basket of biscuits and hush puppies and stole another tables basket as well :-D The servers were exceptionally nice, and the atmosphere was industrial/trendy but welcoming. The complimentary valet service was a plus, as parking ourselves seemed like it was going to be tricky! I highly recommend this place if you find yourselves in downtown Durham!

We've been to The Pit as casual diners a few times, but our main interaction with this place has been Thanksgiving. We had our last three Thanksgivings supplied by The Pit, and the first two experiences were awesome. Great food and excellent value for money. This most recent experience was a huge departure however. We measured the "pound" of pulled pork they gave us, and even with the container it was only 12 oz. It was given to us in the same size container as our sides; very disappointing especially compared to previous years. The pound of ham was a larger portion, but wasn't very good. We were really looking forward to this meal and felt pretty let down. All in all, The Pit has decent barbecue but is not close to the best in town. If you want great barbecue, there are several places in Durham you should go before coming to The Pit. It's really not bad, it just can't compete with the other better options around it.

The food here was excellent! I had the New Brunswick stew and it was delicious! Our server made us feel welcome and explained all the sauces to us, even the history! I will definitely be going back.

The food and atmosphere is amazing. I'm not a NC native, so I'm not too keen on the NC-style BBQ. But, I really love the BBQ here. Best of all are the nearby bars to go to afterward. You can have a really fun night with friends here.
