Story

Founded in 1985 by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), one of the leading sculptors and designers of the twentieth century, The Noguchi Museum was the first museum in America to be founded, designed, and installed by a living artist to show their own work. Widely viewed as among the artist’s greatest achievements, the Museum features an indoor/outdoor sculpture garden and two floors of exhibition space in a converted factory building. Since its founding, it has served as an international hub for Noguchi research and appreciation. In addition to housing the artist’s archives and the catalogue raisonné of his work, the Museum exhibits a comprehensive selection of sculpture, models for public projects and gardens, dance sets, and his Akari lanterns. Provocative, frequently-changing installations drawn from the permanent collection, together with diverse special exhibitions, offer a rich, contextualized view of Noguchi’s art and illuminate his enduring influence as a category-defying, multicultural, cross-disciplinary innovator.

The Noguchi Museum is located at 9-01 33rd Road (at Vernon Boulevard), Long Island City, New York. It is open Wednesday–Friday, 10 am–5 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 11 am– 6 pm. General admission is $10; $5 for senior citizens and students with a valid ID. New York City public high-school students, children under 12, and Museum members are admitted free of charge. Admission is free on the first Friday of every month. Public tours in English are available daily at 2 pm, and in Japanese on the first Friday and second Sunday of every month. 718-204-7088 or www.noguchi.org

Amazing how this man got involved with the hardest materials in the world, granite (so many types), basalt, marbles (so many and so different) even terracotta, wood, bronze and steel and still managed to forma the most desirable shapes with most seductive curves and textures but, you are not allowed to touch them or somebody will jump and scold you. Why did the artist do all those special textures and surfaces if not to feel with your tactile sense the beauty of the object? Still an amazingly beautiful and inspiring exhibition of an outstanding artist.

Such a peaceful place. The garden is so nice. You can really relax and enjoy the art work here. Never a rush.

Really liked the lower level of the museum, particularly the basalt statues. Didn't know much about Noguchi except for his work for Herman Miller until I visited, he's so much more than that.

Nice collection of Noguchi's art. Admission fee was slightly higher than what I felt was worth it.

This museums is one of the most beautiful in the city, and although the collection does not often change - it's dreamlike and meditative atmosphere would make me visit again regardless. It's outdoor areas, modern interpretations of a traditional Japanese garden, were fun to explore despite a heavy rain. I enjoyed it so much that I might argue the museum is meant to visited in the rainy seasons (fall and spring). I recommend sitting through the (lengthy) documentary at the back of the museum, near the exit. Noguchi was an artist whose life is as much a part of his legacy as his work. His responses to adversity are inspirational, and his work takes on a new dimension after you've seen it.
