In the past two years I have flown in and out of Austin airport  15-20 times and several times have used the Alamo car rental there at the airport.  I have always had good experiences with the staff there and their policies regarding no extra fee for a spouse to drive the car & a reasonable fee for using the toll roads are some of the best available.  Only Enterprise has a better policy on the toll road.
Let's face it, as I am sure many of you reading this do, I shop for the best priced rental car for each trip I make.  Very unfortunately, Alamo is often not the best price, sometimes more than double the best price.
This most recent experience I had made a reservation with Hertz, as they had won the best priced lottery for that trip, however when we got to the counter, they wanted to charge us an additional 15 per day for my husband to be able to drive the vehicle, making it far and away, NOT the best price.  We walked over to the very friendly & helpful employees at the Alamo counter & they had us into a bigger car, for less money, husband is no charge to drive & we even added our son as a driver, prepaid the gas & paid less for all of that then just me driving alone on the Hertz rental...needless to say we were quite pleased.
I truly wish they would be more consistent in their pricing which would allow us to use Alamo every time.  We simply cannot justify spending 50-100% more, which is often what they charge.
Overall we were very satisfied with this particular car rental experience with Alamo.
The only thing we weren't pleased with, is the apparent lack of vehicles available that have not been smoked in before.
Sure we know the policy is no smoking.  We also know that Alamo, as do the other car rental companies, get cars back from renters who have smoked in them.  They all do their "deodorizing treatment" before putting them back into rotation, but that doesn't actually fix the problem for those of us with extreme allergies to tobacco.  It seems only logical that there is a service record of some sort kept for every single vehicle in the fleet.  So, when I stand at the counter and tell you I NEED a car that hasn't been smoked in, why can't your employees have a list of vehicles that have never had to be treated for smoking available to them so that they can assign me a car that is safe for me to be in, rather than me having to go through the hassle of checking car by car once I am in the lot.  This time it only took 2 cars, but sometimes I have to go into 3 or 4 different vehicles & turn on the heat (the only accurate way to find out past the perfuming process) sitting there waiting until it heats up (often in Austin when it is horribly hot & humid, this is an EXTREMELY unpleasant process) then discovering that yes, under the gobs of deodorizer/perfume they applied, indeed there is smoking residue which causes me to have an allergic reaction.  Then I have to proceed to go through this same tedious and uncomfortable process through multiple cars to finally find one that hasn't been smoked in.  This is just very frustrating when I know that all of the companies have a record of which cars have been smoked in & treated.
In fairness, that is my complaint with ALL car rental companies, not just this one.
I seriously doubt that I am the only person in the universe with severe allergy to tobacco products/smoke residue.  It just seems that this would not be too hard to resolve this problem & the car rental company that does resolve it successfully someday, will have my business forever!

It is a little confusing to find the rental counter. They need more signs in the Airport lobbies both lower and upper. It would have been nice if the walkway was covered a little better as it is opened and was snowing. There were not a lot of dry paths to the counter. Once inside the experience at the counter was good. I realize Alamo has no choice in the design but hopefully they can suggest a change.

The rental experience was good.  The only complaint is that a premium level car did not have  a navigation system.
The ladies at check in went out of their way to find a caar that fit a 6'7" man with lots of luggage.

Had a very pleasant experience from start to finish...The young man at the counter was great, I wish I could remember his name and  finished Michele who was the highlight! Best price, service and time of availability...will definitely be using them again in the future! I will "Remember the Alamo!" :)

Very smooth, easy transaction.  Rental staff was amazing.  They went above and beyond with helping us out as my husbands wheelchair was damaged at the airport by the grounds crew.  The Alamo staff helped me with my luggage and helped us get into a very comfortable mini van which helped erase the disaster at the airport.  Thanks very much for all of the help!!!!
