This is by far the worst Avis I’ve been to and I typically rent a vehical for work on a weekly basis depending which state I’m in that week. I always use AVIS but when in Hoboken, I started going to Newark airport (which charges you ~+$20 more in standard airport fees) because of the consistently bad experiences I’ve had here. I’m a preferred plus member and have never received an upgrade, unless I asked for it, and even then it’s not worth the time it takes for  the attendant to complain about having to find another car. I’ve actually been given cars below my reservation and had to debate if the car was actually a full size by pulling up the car in google and showing the attendant “compact” in the description. In retaliation of me asking for an exchange, he gave me a full size car but it was by far the worst rental car I ever got - I’m actually surprised they’re even allowed to rent this car to customers. Other times I’ve been given cars that have garbage left from the prior customer, a check engine or check oil light on (but am always told not to worry), some smell like an ashtray, others don’t have power anything/ or bluetooth - the list goes on and on. 1 of the 3 main staff at the location is great. He remembers my name, is welcoming, a pleasure to interact with but the other 2 main staff are rude, condescending and can care less about the customer. Most of the time they make me wait, are on the phone while helping me or just don’t even acknowledge I’m there outside of asking for my credit card. And that’s only if they actually show up on time and aren’t trying to sneak out early. I once got there at 6:55, which I’ll admit was close (they close at 7) but instead of behind helpful, the attendant told me he already shut the computer down for the night...? 

If I ever ask if there is an upgraded available they’ll say yes but then when they realize I’m preferred plus and should automatically be upgraded (if the car is available ) at no cost they backtrack and say its actually reserved. The best part - this has happened several time and EVERY time when I come back to drop off the car, the upgrade is still in the same exact spot. Just today I was in a rush, so I rented from them for the first time in a few months. The professional attendee I mentioned above helped me. He pulled out keys to a car and asked his co-worker where it was on the lot, his co-worker whispered not to give me that car and then handed him another set of keys for a much lower quality car. He didn’t think I could hear what he said, but I did. Long story short, if you could avoid this place - do it all costs. I try my best to avoid renting there, even thought it’s going to cost me more to rent from the airport or in the city. I actually am going to see if Hertz would match my status... if you don’t believe me, sort the reviews by lowest and see ALL the people who had very similar experiences.

The car needed a wash. Why would they give someone a dirty car???? So wrong. Now I know at closing to ask if car is clean and if not to give me same class or an ugrade that is clean.

Worst Avis in the country. They put me on hold  for 30 minutes. They tell me we have cars available. I take a Taxi to find out they don't have any cars available. They don't honor military and The custodial they have renting cars are very rude unprofessional uneducated & mean then they says they provide good customer service. I don't know how they are in business. Unfortunately there isn't any way to give them a 0 rating or less than that. I wouldn't recommend this place to know one.

The service at this franchise location is awful and the employees lump in additional fees without telling you. In addition to this, I have rented cars from here that were not mechanically maintained and the cars are typically not cleaned up from the prior rental. I strongly recommend going anywhere but here.
