We are so grateful to Nicholas at this Budget location. We arrived at the airport and the Budget rental did not have any minivans (which we reserved months ago.) After cramming 5 people and luggage into a much smaller car, we tried the next day to switch out for a larger car at the Budget on Washington in downtown Portland. Nicholas meet us on the curb even before we could park and told us it would be no problem to switch cars. He personally went to pick up the minivan at the lot and handed the keys to us. We are very grateful for his help and for saving our roundtrip.

Caveat: my reservation isn't until August. That said, due to so many poor reviews, and since I'm traveling during one of Oregon's busiest events, I panicked and called the location directly to confirm my reservation. The first few times the phone transferred directly to the corporate line. Eventually I made it through to someone at the location, Lester, who was very pleasant, professional and informative. He confirmed my reservation and phone number, and gave me some advice about assuring I get my rental without having to wait too long. I feel much better after calling. Fingers crossed my in-person experience will be similar.

Quick in, quick return.  No non-sense.  Car received was great, less than 3,000 miles so practically new.  Ford Focus with bluetooth, GPS, infrared parking sensors.  Great price, used my Realtor association discounted rate with free upgrade.  I will go back when back in Portland and needing a rental.

I want to give zero stars but that's not an option. Made a reservation for 2pm pick up. I went out of town and my wife needed this rental to get around while I was gone. She showed up at 1:58pm and they told her they were closed already. No call at 1:50 to make sure she was on the way, nothing. Had to know that someone might be on the way since I made a reservation. But instead as locking the door told my wife that they were closed, so don't take reservations at 2pm or make a call to let someone know. So door was shut in her face and then because it was pride weekend there were no rentals anywhere in town left at the open locations for her to get. Was forced to lug two kids around town for 4 days on the bus, at the break of dawn to get to daycare before work, which takes significantly longer than driving yourself. All for someone to close 2 minutes early. Thanks budget, I will make sure no one I know uses you and even try to get people who I don't know to boycott you. You don't deserve any business. You should have a ten minute grace period, that's what good customer service establishments do. I would rather pay a few extra bucks and get Avis or enterprise in the future.

Our experience with this rental agency involved returning a large transit van. We showed up with the van on the day of the return, only to discover a sign stating that due to a family emergency, the agency was closed. We had to spend close to 20 minutes on the phone with Budget's help desk, explaining repeatedly the problem. Eventually, we were able to return the van to a different location, but the experience was still quite negative. I recognize that family concerns happen, but a shop that can be shut down entirely due to a family emergency is to me one that is not reliable, and reliability is one of the main things one wants to see in a rental company. Considering the many other options available in Portland, I would encourage others to look elsewhere.
